I Never Played Mass Effect

I never played Mass Effect. I don’t know why, I’ve been given every opportunity, the game is a long, deep sci-fi epic, and is a virtual rape simulator according to some hilariously misinformed news broadcasters. So why is my twitchy trigger finger nervous to hit the start button? Well it probably has something to do with my irrational fear of inventory management. With Mass Effect 3 coming out, this seems like a perfect opportunity for a study on a storyline I know absolutely nothing about.

In Defense of Day One DLC

Making a profitable videogame for current-gen consoles is an expensive and risky business venture.  Charging as much as you can get away with is, unfortunately an effective tactic to ensure success.  While few game publishers would try to break the sixty-dollar price ceiling with a retail product, they do try to circumvent that by offering quick and numerous DLC packs.  Consumer outrage grows greater the closer these DLC packs are to launch, and the inevitable worst-case-scenario for a buyer is the Day One DLC.

Hands On With The Binary Domain Demo

Binary Domain is a cyberpunk cover-based shooting game about shooting robots in Japan while issuing commands to your teammates. This may not seem like the most compelling and original premise in the entire world, but where Binary Domain seeks to stand out is not in reinventing the formula, but rather doing it better and in more compelling and experimental ways. With an emphasis on storyline and squad-based combat, it tries to give a very real, fleshy taste of its gameplay in its demo time. Does it hold up? Is its unique approach to interacting with team members enough to keep the demo interesting?

Syndicate Developers Doing What’s Best for the Series

Starbreeze Studios, the Swedish minds behind both critically-acclaimed The Chronicles of Riddick games, are reviving a long-dormant franchise tomorrow.  Syndicate will release in just a few short hours, and fans of the first game, also titled Syndicate (released way back in 1993), are hesitant considering the switch from an isometric tactical shooter to a more modern, first-person perspective.  I’m going to attempt to allay their fears and disappointment, as I firmly believe that this is the correct transition to get this futuristic sci-fi shooter into the attention of gamers everywhere.

Hands On With Asura’s Wrath – Six Hands On!

Asura’s Wrath has an impressive amount of gumption behind it judging by the the demo that hit XBLA recently. Comprised of two chapters from the full game, the demo for Asura’s Wrath is just as noisy and frenetic as one would should hope. What appears to be a gleeful celebration of soul-boiling cataclysmic rage is hiding a certain amount of depth from the player in numerous ways.

Was The Reckoning Demo A Turnoff For The Full Game?

The demo of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning begins by letting you see the death of your character. Luckily, you are the first person ever to be revived in the Well of Souls and thus Kingdoms sets up both a tale of vengeance and gives your character a clean slate.  When the Well resurrected you, the weave of fate left you without a destiny which creates a dynamic where the protaginist of Kingdoms is the only one in the world who can carve out their own destiny. This plays a role in the class system as, at regular intervals, you can swap your “fate card” in order to have a certain class such as rogue, warrior, or mage.
