The casting for Marc Webb's Spider-Man revamp has begun! Apparently, the (500) Days of Summer director has been meeting with actors for several months, but within the past few days, the list of candidates has become smaller. Here's the list of actors in contention to step into the shoes once filled by Tobey Maguire.
Jamie Bell(age 24) - He won the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his debut performance in Stephen Daldry's Billy Elliott. However, that was ten years ago. Despite maintaining a career in Hollywood with films such as Defiance, Jumper, and Nicholas Nickleby, his career hasn't soared in the way that it should have. We already know that he can act. Plus he looks the part. Being cast in this revamp could bring him back into the spotlight and give his career the boost that it needs.
Frank Dillane (age 19) - The young Brit's only major film role as of now is that of Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. He doesn't really look like he could fit the part, and due to his limited filmography, very little is known of his acting range. If Webb goes with Dillane, it would be a riskier move.
Alden Ehrenreich(age 20) - He starred in Tetro, Francis Ford Coppola's most recent feature, and stars in Sofia Coppola's Somewhere opposite Benicio del Toro, Michelle Monaghan, and Elle Fanning later this year. He bears a mild resemblance to Tobey Maguire and certainly looks like he could fit the part. Ehrenreich was supposedly discovered by Steven Spielberg in a video at a Bat Mitzvah. Talk about awesome.
Andrew Garfield(age 27) - Garfield has a very limited catalog of films so far, but he does star in two notable, potentially Academy-embraced films this year: Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go and David Fincher's The Social Network. However, he looks more fitting for the role of Harry Osborne than Peter Parker.
Josh Hutcherson(age 17) - Hutcherson has a very mixed body of work behind him. He's been acting a long time despite his young age, with leading roles in films such as Bridge to Terabithia, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Zathura. He is easily one of the most experienced of the bunch. He will star in the heavily buzzed-about The Kids Are All Right alongside Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, and Mia Wasikowska later this year.

Even though some of these choices seem very off-the-wall (no Spidey pun intended), Marc Webb is sure to make a great choice. I'm not sure that I could make a decision, but if I had to choose, it would be between Jamie Bell, Alden Ehrenreich, and Josh Hutcherson. Ehrenreich has his resemblance to the character as his main advantage; Bell and Hutcherson have more experience in the business.
