Warner Bros. Plan to Adapt ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’
2016 is the comeback year for the
Harry Potter series - a spin-off film
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is coming out later this year, J.K. Rowling has released three e-books looking at the magical world of
Harry Potter and a play that has become a big hit on the West End in London.
The New York Daily News has reported that Warner Bros. are planning to adapt the play into a movie trilogy for a 2020 release.
It is hardly a surprise that Warner Bros. would turned
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child into a movie, the series was one of Warner Bros' biggest cash cows, it made a collective $7.7 Billion Worldwide and all the films were critically well received. Warner Bros. has also been suffering from a string of flops like
Jupiter Ascending,
Pan and
The Legend of Tarzan and the DCEU movies have been met with a negative critical response. A new Harry Potter film should be a sure fire hit.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is set 19 years after the ends of
Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows and focuses on Harry Potter as the head of Magical Law Enforcement and his son Albus who has to deal with the burden of the Potter name. Both father and son have to face dark forces effecting the wizarding world. The play has been well received by critics, tickets have been sold out for months and a book release based on the rehearsal script was the fastest selling book for over a decade in the UK.
An issue that could affect the movie is the availability of Daniel Radcliffe. The Daily News' sources within Warner Bros. want Radcliffe to return, but Radcliffe has distance himself from the role that made him famous. Potterheads would also be hostile if Radcliffe doesn't return to the series and replaced with another actor.
In the mean time we have the
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to look forward to, a prequel set in 1920s New York and follows Newt Scamander, a magical beasts expert who has to capture creatures who escaped in the Big Apple. This is the first
Harry Potter film that J.K. Rowling has written the screenplay for and Academy Award winning actor Eddie Redmayne stars as Scamander. A sequel has already been announced.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will hit theaters on November 18 this year.
