Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3: Which is Better?

The Call of Duty series has seen better times. Technically, it’s still the best selling and most popular first person shooter franchise out there, but with the departure of a large chunk of the original Infinity Ward team, and reports of every Activision studio pooling their efforts to get Modern Warfare 3 out of the gate, it’s easy to assume the franchise is losing steam. This wouldn’t be a problem, except there’s a competitor, and a pretty huge one, at that. Battlefield 3. This game has floored anyone who’s watched the gameplay with it’s amazing graphics, which look like they belong on a different generation of hardware. At the same time, the gameplay itself is taking a far different approach than Modern Warfare 3, with far slower pacing, less battles, and more realism. It’s somewhat obvious which game won over the audience at E3, but which one is truly better, from what we’ve seen so far?

Kinect at E3

OK, I admit it.  I am one of those people who waited in line at launch for an I-Pad 2, me and my buddy took shifts waiting outside HMV for the 3DS, and heck, I even bought a Playstation Move on the first day (only to sell it a week later.)  But for some reason, I didn’t bother with Kinnect.  Every now and again I give it a second thought, but nothing has enticed me yet, and after the slightly misleading stage demo at E3 this year, I feel my decision has been vindicated.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record Details

Announced a couple of months ago, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is essentially the director’s cut of the originalDead Rising 2. It originally started out as an upgrade with more content and Chuck as the main character but due to the fan outcry of Frank not being in the original, Capcom saw fit to make him the new lead character for Off The Record. There’s  a new theme park area included as well as new combo weapons and the photography mechanic will make a return.

Elder Scrolls V – Dragon Born

Bethesda’s award-wining RPG, Oblivion didn’t miss out on much.  It had an epic story, a vast world to explore and dragons… No… Wait.  It didn’t have dragons.  But the sequel, Skyrim does, and they are looking an intriguing prospect to say the least.  Many have tried and failed over the years to get these creatures right in videogames, but it seems that Bethesda has finally nailed it.  They are incorporated into Skyrim with purpose, extreme technicality and grace.

XCOM E3 2011 Preview

The original XCOM: UFO Defense (or Enemy Unknown) is one of the most highly regarded PC games of all time, and some people still go back and play it’s turn based strategy to this day, 17 years after it was first released. That being said, there was a bit of hesitation at last year’s E3 about a new first person XCOM experience, developed by 2K Marin, creators of Bioshock 2. XCOM: UFO Defense was and still is a game of strategy, and many fans felt that XCOM couldn’t translate that strategy into a first person shooter. Well, from what I’ve seen and heard about the new XCOM at this year’s E3, I can safely say that it will feel a lot more like the old XCOM than you might think, with more deepness and complexity than was shown last year.

Hands on with El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron

This game claims to be based on ancient religious texts, but it really doesn’t matter, because the story is pretty much incomprehensible, and divine intervention won’t help make it make any more sense, if the demo released on Xbox live today is any indication.  While it has gotten a lot of buzz for having an unusual design scheme, the gameplay present in the demo makes it seem like style over substance.  Despite its allegedly holy inspirations, my hour with it felt like an eternity in hell.
