If you’re a videogamer of any type or creed, unless
you’ve been hiding in a Siberian cave for the last few months, you’ll have
noticed that a new Call of Duty game was on the way. Well, the wait is over- Modern Warfare 3 was released yesterday amidst a wave of hyperbolic
press and claims of it being “the most anticipated video game in history”

Uncharted as an intellectual property has been the ‘jewel in the crown’ for Sony and their stable of great PlayStation exclusives. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves were well received critically and financially. So undoubtedly there was a metric ton of hype for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. With so many games coming out right now, I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “Should I buy into the hype? Do I need to get this game?”
As many of you may have anticipated, the latest entry into the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise, Modern Warfare 3, has set new record highs for game sales. It seems to be something of a tradition for this series, asModern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, and Black Ops all set the bar quite high themselves. When I was in line at Best Buy yesterday, everyone in front of me had a copy (or two even) of MW3 in their hands.
Microsoft announced yesterday that they are planning to release their successful foray into motion gaming, Kinect, for Windows in 2012. The news comes from General Manager for Windows Craig Eisler via his official blog.
Microsoft also released a new beta version for Windows SDK yesterday which features “faster skeletal tracking, better accuracy rate when it comes to skeletal tracking and joint recognition, and the ability to plug and unplug your Kinect without losing work/productivity.” This is the 2nd beta version of the peripheral.
When the highly-anticipated The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim releases this Friday, November 11, there will be a patch available for download from Bethesda. This patch will be available for all platforms (PC, Xbox 360, PS3). It is unclear what the patch will actually do or fix, but hopefully those details will emerge sometime before release and won’t contain any serious issues.
In a recent interview, director Todd Howard explained the company’s plans for future DLC for Skyrim, saying that there are plans for “substantial” pieces of downloadable content. Howard told Wired.com that “We’re not going to be doing a lot of it.” This is a little misleading, as Howard went on to explain that “Our high-level thinking is that there’ll be not as many [pieces of DLC], but they’ll be bigger and more substantial. The goal overall is not necessarily to put out more content, but to make the game better.” Chances are the plans for Skyrim are a little bigger than something like the Horse Armor Pack from Oblivion.
Bioware have already begun to tease fans awaiting the announcement of their new game franchise by them at this years VGA Awards Show. They’ve released a teaser image for a trailer that fans will get to see at this year’s VGA Awards Show. The teaser shows off a some highly detailed vehicular destruction in a desert setting of some sort. Check the image out below:
Over the weekend, a few men in France crashed their car into a truck that was carrying video game-related cargo (which was later figured out to be Infinity Ward’s latest title, Modern Warfare 3), and upon breaking into the truck, attacked the driver and passenger with tear gas. In similar fashion, another heist was conducted, in which a car was used to block the road which a truck was traveling, allowing the assailants to steal the truck with the games in it.
The second attack was not monetized, but the number of copies stolen from the first heist cost somewhere around €400,000, and the physical number of copies stolen was in the range of 6,000. While this may seem like a fairly large-scale crime, bootlegged copies of Modern Warfare 3 are being leaked all over the place. With such a wide-scale release, the number of copies produced is massive, so if some low level worker at Wal-Mart decides to go into the back and cut into the palette, he or she could sell the copies of the game for massive profit (in fact, the most expensive copy of the game on eBay reached 1,700 dollars). If you’re one who can wait though, MW3 comes out later tonight at a much more reasonable price.
