Sly Cooper HD Collection Coming to PSN

On November 29th, PSN users will be able to download the Sly Cooper HD Collection for $29.99 US or $10 each if they aren’t sure about playing all three. I played all the Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter games on my PS2, so you’d think another cartoony action platformer series like this would have really interested me, but for one reason or another I just never got around to them. This may be the perfect chance for me, and anyone else who missed out, to give them a try. Exactly as Sony planned.

All of the major releases have come and gone this year and many of us are making plans for what we will be getting for the holidays or picking up for others. There is a branch of the gaming market that is easy to overlook when it comes to holiday shopping, but it should no longer be ignored.  The Xbox Live Arcade titles that have been released this year are some of the best thus far. Followed here is a list of some of the best that were released over the year and why a Points Card might just be one of the best stocking stuffers you could hope to get as a gamer:

Fan Requested Uncharted 3 Patch Coming

I and many other people who have played Naughty Dog’s latest entry in the monkey climbing adventures of Nathan Drake were quite surprised at the major changes made to the feel of Uncharted 3’s shooting mechanics.  Those who have spoken out about this agree that, while the general control scheme remained identical, the dead zone of the reticule and all kinds of other subtle and technical aspects that go into every games interaction were definitely altered substantially from 2009s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

To deal with this, Naughty Dog actually offered to fly the most vocal of the games community to their offices to help them figure out exactly why the shooting didn’t feel right for so many, the conclusion being that for those gamers who enjoyed Uncharted 2 simply felt the way it played was superior to that of Uncharted 3 without actually having the knowledge and experience to explain how and why.  Naughty Dog set out to find the answer and after many tests have decided to release an update to Uncharted 3 that will tweak how the game’s shooting feels in order to closer mirror Uncharted 2’s.  Like Killzone 2, which also had its shooting tweaked, this will be an option that players can choose to toggle on and off in an upcoming patch.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Review (360)

It doesn’t take long to reach one of the pivotal moments you’re sure to experience while playing Skyrim: that instant when you begin to get an inkling of just how much content is crammed into the wintry Nord province.  Within minutes of surviving the harrowing opening sequence, you’ll be confronted with a vast landscape filled to the brim with intrigue, conflict, and a seemingly endless cast of characters that all need your assistance.  Whether you’re questing for the Jarl of one of Skyrim’s nine Holds, picking the lock of an affluent home to steal an item for the Thieves Guild, or crouching behind an outcropping of rock to evade the breath of a dragon somewhere in the wilderness, you’ll never find yourself wanting for things to do.  Even excluding the game’s main quest and the various faction quests, the amount of tasks you’ll find yourself faced with is staggering.

Of course, this has always been true of the Elder Scrolls series.  Yet Skyrim offers perhaps more than any other game in the series, rarely wasting an opportunity to provide the player with incentive to scale every mountain and walk every canyon floor.  Exploration for its own sake also has its own rewards, leading the player to locations and quests that might’ve otherwise gone unnoticed.  Inevitably, you’ll find yourself ignoring the growing number of quests in your journal in order to avoid being overwhelmed.  The choices you make will shape not only your character’s destiny, but will also define your character’s developing abilities.  Bethesda has done away with the practice of creating or choosing a class, instead allowing you to advance your skills simply by using them.  If you decide early on in the game to join the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild, by the time you’ve completed the quests for those factions you’ll likely have become a standard rogue.  Skills are not divided into categories or ranks; any one of them can be developed and will contribute to the leveling process.

Xcom developer working on Bioshock Infinite

2K Australia, the developer working on the Xcom reboot, is helping Irrational Games out on Bioshock Infinite. The studio also helped to put the finishing touches on the original Bioshock, so this doesn’t come as a surprise. This puts some perspective on Xcom’s recent delay into fiscal 2012, which runs until March 2013. Bioshock Infinite is a flagpole release for publisher 2K, so it’s likely they’ll want the game polished and finished post-haste.

Achievement Unlocked – Bottom of the Barrel

As we come to another release week, the blockbuster season has ended and as the holiday season starts full swing, the releases begin to dwindle down to near nothing. This week is headlined by WWE ’12 and The King of Fighters XIII with a few other minor releases that leave something to be desired when it comes to the achievement side of things. WWE ’12 has an interesting reminder to everyone who follows wrestling in any fashion with the achievement ‘Thank You Edge‘ which involves winning with him 37 times in a single session. Sadly, from an achievement standpoint, that is one of the only unique achievements that will not come from normal progression and is just grinding through the games.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Review

As the screen loads up and that all familiar blue loading font works its way across the screen, that sense of nostalgia is incredible. The main menu looks no different to its predecessor, though it comes with the added bonuses of a firefight and multiplayer mode. Putting these to a side for a moment, I eagerly throw myself into the campaign mode to see how dramatically a time passage of ten years is about to alter my playing experience.

First impressions are grand. The guy in front of me is telling me to look from left to right, and from looking at the different points I catch my first glimpses of new surroundings. 343 Studios have done a brilliant job at remastering the visuals, and due to the new game engine in the campaign, a quick press of the back button allows you to switch back and forth between the original graphics and the remastered ones. This allows for constant comparisons throughout the campaign which will see yourself finding a beautiful looking landscape, hitting the back button to travel back ten years, and then again to give yourself a comparison of how the better the visuals in this game look.
