Syndicate Developers Doing What’s Best for the Series

Starbreeze Studios, the Swedish minds behind both critically-acclaimed The Chronicles of Riddick games, are reviving a long-dormant franchise tomorrow.  Syndicate will release in just a few short hours, and fans of the first game, also titled Syndicate (released way back in 1993), are hesitant considering the switch from an isometric tactical shooter to a more modern, first-person perspective.  I’m going to attempt to allay their fears and disappointment, as I firmly believe that this is the correct transition to get this futuristic sci-fi shooter into the attention of gamers everywhere.

PlayStation Vita Launches This Wednesday in United States and Europe

There have been multiple discourses about the future of handheld gaming and whether or not the future will come in the form of a traditional handheld produced by Nintendo or Sony, or whether the market has clearly taken a turn toward mobile gaming, which will make dedicated handhelds obsolete.  If you look at the sales numbers for the Nintendo 3DS, there is a clear indication that handheld gaming clearly is taking quite a beating from the mobile market, but Sony hopes to change this with the release of the PlayStation Vita, which drops this Wednesday in North America.

Although the Vita has already been out in Japan for a few months (it was released in mid December 2011), North Americans and Europeans alike will soon be able to have their first impressions of the system, and it’s surprisingly stacked launch title lineup.  Perhaps the most impressive game to drop at launch for the Vita is Uncharted: Golden Abyss, yet the reviews of it so far have been, let’s say, less than satisfactory.  Despite a possibly iffy launch lineup, Sony has previously stated that they hope to have the Vita be a 5-10 year product, and with such heavy hitters as Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, Media Molecule, and Geurilla getting behind the system, it certainly looks as if the Vita may be the system to overthrow the mobile market boom.

New Experiment Proves Video Games Are Good For You

It’s too easy to give video games bad press these days. Society often finds itself passing the blame for a lot of today’s problems onto the media, and in particular, video games. Enter delicious irony. A recent experiment has found that first person shooter video games can improve the sight of adults afflicted by cataracts, so keep counting up those kills in online FPS games!

Syndicate: A New Perspective On Classic Cyberpunk

Back in the early 90’s, the first person shooter was just getting started with games like Wolfenstein 3D, and DOOM.  If you made a game about a team of gun-toting cyborgs it wasn’t going to be anything like a modern FPS.  The original Syndicate from 1993 was about heavily-armed cyberpunk troops, but it was a tactical, real-time strategy game shown from an isometric view. Gaming technology has finally caught up with the ideas behind the series and the new Syndicate game out this year is, in fact, a first person shooter.

Asura’s Wrath: Preview

The first time I saw Asura’s Wrath it was a trailer of an angry cyborg man punching the continent sized finger of a giant cyborg space Buddha.  It was then and there that I knew no matter how it turned out; even if it were the worst game ever made I would have to play it.
