Ubisoft Delays Watch Dogs to Spring 2014
At this time of the year, it is crunch time for the biggest releases before they go gold and get released sometime in November. That is not going to be the case for
Watch Dogs anymore as Ubisoft has announced that the highly anticipated game has been delayed to Spring 2014. This delay is arguably one of the biggest news to a game of such stature in a while especially when it is going to be a launch title for both the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. According to Ubisoft's blog, the game needed more polish and fine tuning, but such a last minute announcement makes you wonder whether or not the game has been in trouble.
Is it the rush to make it to launch? One of the versions (likely the next-gen ones) too far behind in development? Or releasing it around the same time as
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag a bad call all along for Ubisoft? Ubisoft themselves wouldn't clarify the real reason besides the ones they mentioned in their blog post, but it is safe to assume personally that it is one of those.
Watch Dogs's delay is going to derail a lot of launch plans for not only gamers, but also Microsoft, Sony, retailers, and even Ubisoft themselves. It was going to be one of the more promising launch titles to get on either next-gen system after all the hype that started at last year's E3 with it's initial reveal. After the numerous trailers leading to it's original reveal, the game started to become more of a disappointment losing the momentum it once had. Sure, it was still heavily marketed as one of the big launch titles by both Sony and Microsoft, but now, the launches for both systems have become a bit less exciting now. Time will tell if the delay is indeed worth it for Ubisoft, but this has to be arguably the biggest disappointment for them this year after spending so much hyping it up at trade shows, conventions, and even
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
If it still came out next month, would
Watch Dogs be 2013's biggest gaming flop? Some would argue for that because of the initial hype that has now turned into disappointment. Ubisoft has not said anything yet about those that pre-ordered PS4 and/or Xbox One bundles that have the game, which will surely bum them out that the game is delayed. They also said that another of their next-gen games is delayed to their next fiscal year, which is
The Crew.
The Crew showed some potential at E3 earlier this year with its approaches to the racing genre, but it was also telling it needed more work, so the delay to that is not surprising compared to
Watch_Dogs being supposed to be released in less than a month.
