Each episode of Eureka’s forth season begins with the tagline “same town, big changes”. However, for the last three instalments, the purported changes have remained almost entirely on the side lines. Momstrosity shines the light firmly on these ongoing stories, whilst still having time to deliver a traditional ‘when science goes wrong’ drama, which is actually one of the most entertaining this season.
When the Leverage gang is at its strongest and most entertaining, everyone in it has a part to play. The team is working together, not unlike in Mission: Impossible group, with every player having a defined role that plays to their strengths. Knowing this, it’s surprising to see an episode that purposely marginalizes everyone aside from Nate (Timothy Hutton), so he can have a show dedicated to him being reunited with his long-incarcerated father.
This week’s episode continues the trend and it is easy to see that In the Light is the best episode of the show so far. In the show’s short run, this is the first episode that not only tells an interesting, if not at times convenient, story, but also raises some pretty deep philosophical questions. The question of what is the ‘greater good‘ is not a new quagmire by any means, but the show approaches the topic lightly, never venturing into the realm of being preachy, but also not answering the question. I think it by design that Gregory Itzin, most will know him as the morally grey President Logan from 24, guest stars as the former head of the CIA and Jay’s father.
Another decisive shunt in the right direction tonight with almost all the key players having their plotlines developed. Some of the more tenuous links between stories have been deepened and with the exception of Sam and Lafayette, all the major characters are now firmly embroiled within a monstrous cocktail of vampires, werewolves and whatever the hell Sookie is.
“I know everything about you, and I still love you.” And with that, Anna Draper, widowed wife of Don Draper, who died in the Korean War when a young solider peed himself and dropped a cigarette, said everything that Dick Whitman wished his wife Betty had said when he finally revealed himself to her. But she couldn’t. Years of lies and betrayal, and a steadfast belief in the image of how her life “should” be, made it impossible. But here, with the woman who’s husband he inadvertently killed, Dick Whitman finds a bit of peace.
SyFy decides to pool its resources this week, with a job swap between its two biggest earners, Eureka and Warehouse 13. The last episode of the paranormal artefact show saw Fargo upgrading the computer system within the warehouse and to return the favour, Eureka receives a guest in the form of Claudia. The episode setup follows the traditional Eureka formula, but there are some great moments between a selection of characters and the dynamic between Jack and the displaced Dr Grant is an enjoyable contrast to all the camaraderie.
We have seen some weird pairs since Futurama came back and this week is by far the weirdest. The story focuses on Amy and Nibbler trying to stop a race of intelligent cats from stealing the gravitational pull of the Earth so they can use it on their planet to save it from oblivion….yep you know typical things. It may be one of the more outlandish plots to an episode of Futurama but it is definitely funny.
Covert Affairs has grown a lot in the show’s short run. Last week I talked about how each episode has been getting better and in this week’s episode, No Quarter, the trend continues. This episode combines the nuances of international espionage and a story back home, in a way that allows both narratives to succeed.
Season 3 of True Blood has been the subject of a fair deal of criticism from fans and critics alike, most notably for straying from some of the deeper themes of social commentary. Where once we were narrated through a tail of Vampire politics and situations with strong racial overtones, the early part of season 3 appeared to have abandoned this altogether. However, as we move past the halfway mark there has been a significant shift in focus, resulting in some real moments of revelation, not to mention a selection of truly gut churning explosions of violence.
