Fringe – Marionette

As expected, Marionette largely dealt with the fallout that alternate Olivia has left on our characters. It was a bit of surprise that our Olivia would be back in the field so quickly. Sure, she’s a tough character, but from the physical stress of being a prisoner and teleporting through universes, she should be resting for a week or two. It does fit her character that she would want to come back to work so quickly. One of the main differences between the two Olivias is that ours doesn’t really have a life or know how to have fun and relax. Her conversation with Broyles where she mentions his similar counterpart and his family was interesting. It was easy to see that his mind was going a million a minute wondering about the “what ifs” of his decisions. Broyles’ background and personality hasn’t been shown as much as Olivia’s, but he also seems like a “my work is my life” type person.

The Walking Dead – TS-19

As The Walking Dead’s brief first season came to an end with the sound of a Bob Dylan song playing in the background, I reflected briefly on what they’ve done over these six episodes. It’s certainly been an up and down ride, though not everyone agrees on what the strong or weak parts were. Personally, I thought the premiere was fantastic, exactly what a show about zombies bringing the end of the world should be like. Then the second episode deviated from the plot of the comics, and screwed things up in grand fashion. The next few episodes and their moments and their pitfalls, but I thought they were of generally improving quality and I was hopeful that we would be up for a slam-bang finale before the year long wait for more episodes. Unfortunately, this episode simply wasn’t very good, not as bad as the show’s nadir in part two, but still the worst it’s been since then.

Supernatural – Caged Heat

As soon as you think you have this show figured out it takes another turn. What seemed to be the season’s overall story arc has already crumbled into pieces. Sadly, this major turn came at the cost of the show’s best demon/monster character so far, Crowley. It seems as if weeks have passed between episodes and the brothers have regularly captured monsters to give to Crowley in his quest for purgatory.

Fringe – Entrada

The episode most fans have been dying to see is finally here and it was worth the buildup. With both Olivias exposed for who they really are, they’re both trying to escape from their current universe. Alternate Olivia’s journey feels like a cat and mouse game, while our Olivia’s experience actually reminded me of ET.

It’s Always Sunny – Stranded in the Woods

After a week off the gang comes back and we get one of the rare road episodes. At least once a season it seems like we get an episode that drops the familiar bar setting and puts our characters in an unknown surrounding. Frank donates money to an animal relief fund and the gang attempts to drive to Atlantic City for the banquet. We know that our characters are idiots, so needless to say, they don’t all get there. Frank gets them all lost in the woods and our characters split up.

30 Rock- Chain Reaction of Mental Anguish

This week on 30 Rock we got an episode with lots of great one-liners and a story that holds together well.  We also got to see the return of two small characters introduced seasons ago.  Remember Tracy’s fake illegitimate son, Donald from the season three episode about how white people can’t tell how old black people are?  What about Jenna’s transvestite boyfriend who likes to dress up as Jenna? Well, he’s back too, and we get to watch Jenna making out with a male version of herself in several scenes, which is either hysterical, or erotic depending on your tastes.

The Office – China

First things first, last night’s cold open was the first weak one in a while. Dwight is attempting to gain the “pedo-dexterity of a monkey” by using his feet instead of his hands for 20 minutes every day, and Jim thinks this is silly. The problem is Dwight never explains why he wants this skill, which is an issue since it seems like the kind of thing he would usually scoff at, and the comedy fails to make up for it. It just wasn’t very good. Luckily, the rest of the episode basically made up for it.

Modern Family – Mother Tucker

I believe this is the first time we have seen a member of Cam’s family. His mom comes to visit him and Mitchell and the results are a bit underwhelming. Throughout the show’s run we have heard about Cam’s rural family and how Mitchell usually mocks it. I kind of expected more from this storyline… all we were given is inappropriate touching. Yeah, that sounds interesting but it just comes off as weird. Not weird as in uncomfortable, but weird as in a weak storyline. The bath scene is pretty funny and ultimately their relationship is stronger because of it. It was also interesting to see how supportive and accepting Cam’s mother was of their relationship. We have to wonder about how she took it when they first met and to me that’s the part we should have been shown.

The Walking Dead – Wildfire

The penultimate episode of The Walking Dead’s first season was the best since the premiere, having no significant issues with the story or characters like those that plagued the last few, and moving the plot along in an exciting way. I’ve noted before how the creators are clearly willing to change the details while keeping the comic’s general outline and some of its more memorable moments, and that’s plenty clear here with a development that shows how much the series is forging its own path.

The Walking Dead – Vatos

After last week’s episode of The Walking Dead seemed to have some logical gaps, it returned last night and mostly righted the ship, making sure to answer those questions and push the story forward a bit quicker than it was going before. The script was actually written by Robert Kirkman, the guy who writes the comic book, and it was interesting how he handled the opportunity. Instead of bringing the story closer to how he made it or even just keep it where it was, he actually added even more new stuff that we hadn’t seen before, proving that the show is concerned with creating its own identity as much as if not more than sticking to the source material. The end of the episode definitely came straight from the books, but we know now that they’re a guide rather than a bible.
