Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Witches of the Mist

O.M.F.G that was freaking amazing. I may have a new favorite episode of the Clone Wars after watching this. The build-up episodes were fantastic and writers from other shows need to watch this and learn how to do pay offs. It had everything you could hope for. Great fights, great characters, hints at what is to come, and it really gave the feel like it was a universe changing event. You’re going to see the words “pay off” a lot in this review, because that is exactly what this episode was.

Fringe – The Firefly

Fringe has returned after a longer than brief hiatus and is just as strong as ever. This episode, The Firefly (no doubt an in-joke to their new time slot) focuses on the Observer and his plans for the Bishops, with Olivia and Peter angst in the background. The episode begins with an old musician (Christopher Lloyd) meeting his long dead son and the fringe team are called to investigate. As the investigation continues, we begin to learn exactly how Walter’s decisions have affected the multiverse. Like the X-files, Fringe’s strongest episodes are the ones that directly deal with the mythology. Season one had way too much filler, Season two learned from this mistake and became one of the best shows on television today. Season three has continued this trend, a continuing mythology that refuses to give its viewers time to rest. Nonstop action.

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena – Past Transgressions

After a perfunctory recap of season one, the very first shot of Gods of the Arena assures viewers that they’ll be getting exactly what they’re expecting, in the form of the top half of a man’s head being separated from the rest of him and landing in the sand while scores of barely clothed commoners cheer from the bleachers. Spartacus is back, and for people who grew to like the show despite its many flaws, it’s fun to be back in its ridiculous world.

The Office – Ultimatum

So there was some interesting Office-related news during the hiatus – the first bit is that Ricky Gervais, star and creator of the original British version of the show and recently in the news for making the Hollywood Foreign Press Association his bitch, will be appearing on the show pretty soon. But more importantly, Steve Carell isn’t leaving at the end of the season. He’s leaving several episodes before that, and the season will wrap up by showing the results of that departure. My question is if they’re giving themselves the opportunity to explore that story before the season is over then why do they feel the need to move on to an eighth year, but either way, it points towards even more urgency to really get a final story for Michael going here in the home stretch.

30 Rock- Mrs. Donaghy

This episode is the first one aired since 30 Rock made its time-slot change to 10:00. The change in schedule might seem like a bad sign for the show, but it is still strong as ever. The theme this week is “Marriage”. Through a wacky series of flashbacks, the audience learns that Liz and Jack accidentally got married since we saw them last. They agree to a quick divorce but, when Jack cuts the budget for Liz’s show, she decides to blackmail him by refusing to grant him a divorce.

Modern Family – Caught in the Act

Caught in the Act is a conflicted episode divided into two distinct plot threads. The Dunphy-Pritchett storyline is great and on par with the best of the series, while Cam and Mitchell’s portion of the show comes off a bit flat. The episode jumps back and forth between the two threads and this distinctly shows their difference in quality even more. While the second storyline causes a few laughs, it mainly comes off as a distraction.

Californication – Suicide Solution

Last week Hank had to deal with the fallout and this week Hank has to deal with himself. We find Mr. Moody crashing at Charlie and Cokeie smurfs house, while he is still on the outs with Karen and his daughter. This may be my favorite opening in the history of the show. The past two weeks they have been playing up the Hank and Charlie relationship, partly because he’s the only character that will go near Hank, and the interactions on the bed were great. It just leaves the question of why Marcie stays at the house at all if she doesn’t want to be with Charlie anymore.

Avengers- Come The Conqueror

Avengers is heading into the conclusion of their Kang The Conqeror storyline, and this week’s episode is wall-to-wall action. Arguably the best episode all season, Come The Conqeror starts off with a bang as it continues from last week’s cliff hanger. In the previous episode, the mis-guided time-traveler Kang came from 2,000 years in the future to destroy the Avengers, and take over the Earth. He’s doing this because his time period in the future is in danger because of events that happen in ours. By re-writing (His) history he hopes to prevent Earth from being conquered by a greater alien threat. It all makes sense from Kang’s point of view, but the Avengers obviously aren’t going to let some 41^st Century meddler take over their planet without a fight.

The Cape – Kozmo

The Cape is now technically in its third episode, and it has gotten better. The first two episodes repeatedly insulted the viewers’ intelligence, while jack-hammering the audience with exposition. But, now that all of the set up is out of the way, the show can set about depicting The Cape’s weekly battle with the forces of evil, while exploring a bunch of subplots.

The latest episode of the Clone Wars takes a dark turn as the recently betrayed Ventress is assigned to find a replacement for Darth Maul to serve count Dooku as a spy. When I catch flack for admitting to watching anything Star Wars, this is the episode I show people to prove them wrong. This episode had such great character development, story arc progression, and was able to expand on the one thing from the prequels that was awesome.
