Alphas – The Devil Will Drag You Under

If we lived in a world where TV series episodes were judged by the value of each scene taken separately, “The Devil Will Drag You Under” would be one of the best episodes of Alphas to date. It featured an evil plan, a fallout between heroes, betrayal (well, sort of), love that can overthrow anything, very fine action sequences, and the greatest sacrifice a human being can make. And yet, there were a few things missing to make the whole an unforgettable hour of television.

Doctor Who – The Power of Three

The Doctor has had a great number of companions, some memorial, some less so. In the new version of the show we have had the personal and real lives of his companions. But The Power of Three gives us the first opportunity to see the lives of Amy and Rory along with the impact of  what traveling for 10 years has on their regular lives. Making matters more interesting, a large number of small black cubes rain down on Earth and The Doctor, his companions, and the international intelligence agency UNIT have to investigate and inspect them before they could enact any sinister purpose they may have.

Revolution – Pilot Review

The recent series premiere of Revolution belongs to the category that makes viewers wonder why some pilots make it to series and others don’t. It took us along on a 15-year ride and introduced us to many characters with mostly tepid lasting effects. What’s more, despite being marketed as an ambitious project, the series is using little-league methods to unveil its overarching story.

Alphas – Falling

Falling was an episode structured in such a way that one could literally pick a favorite story and completely ignore the others. This is not to say that most storylines were lacking — they were in fact very decent — but rather to stress that they were completely independent. Preoccupied with his daughter Dani, Rosen left the case of the week in the capable hands of Bill. And while under her father’s scrutiny, Dani managed to spend some time with Cameron and his son and permanently affected the relationship between the two.

Last Resort – Captain (Early Review)

The series premiere of Last Resort is still a bit more than a week away, but ABC was kind enough to make the episode available online. Luckily, we here at PlayerAffinity TV mostly have good things to say about it. A pilot episode is usually the proof-of-concept, or sample made to sell the series to a network. Pilot episodes come in all shapes and sizes, and most of them — even among the most successful — are rarely as engrossing as this one was. In just one episode, we’ve managed to get a pretty good sense of all major characters while following the crew in the middle of the Indian Ocean (and the folks back in the U.S.) through an engaging story.

Doctor Who – A Town Called Mercy

After two adventures set in the depths of space, Doctor Who comes down to Earth for a historically set adventure, which takes The Doctor to the wild wild west. While on route to Mexico for the Dead of the Day Festival, The Doctor and his companions land in a strange American Frontier town held under siege by a cyborg, The Gunslinger (Andrew Brooke), wanting the alien doctor.

Alphas – Gods and Monsters

“Gods and Monsters” completed with the right notes the re-introduction of the Nina started at the beginning of the season. The episode also tried to kill two birds with one stone with its main storyline, and that is where things got a bit tricky as it muddled its way through a collaboration between Parish and Rosen that didn’t always raise the right kind of questions.

Alphas – When Push Comes to Shove

The rightly-titled “When Push Comes to Shove” put Nina Theroux on center stage. The alpha with the hyper-induction ability “pushed” her way to the brink of auto-destruction in an episode that explored her past and her struggle with her mistakes. The story also flaunted the refreshing newcomer Kat who offered a lighter, and arguably more effective, mirror to some of Nina’s issues.

Falling Skies – The Price of Greatness

After the season’s low point last week, it seemed the show had nowhere else to go but up, which it did, but the improvement was barely noticeable. “The Price of Greatness” was far from being as engrossing as its title. The episode oversimplified the making of a “new” nation to allow its main character to shine, painted such a sharp contrast between the rest of the world and the 2nd Massachusetts as to irritate anyone with a shred of skepticism, and was so predictable it undercut its own pizzazz.

Alphas – Alpha Dogs

“Alpha Dogs” introduced us to an engaging new character and took us on a fascinating journey into Stanton Parish’s past. Kat, the newcomer, helped open a new window into the world of alphas, and Parish left breadcrumbs for Rosen to find in an episode where the case was, once again, not designed to stand out on its own.
