Last Resort – Another Fine Navy Day Review

“Another Fine Navy Day” didn’t have the high stakes of the previous episode and even showed some early signs of a “filler” storyline. To make matters worse, the story featured the only character in the series who tends to swing conveniently with the plot and a nonsensical decision to dive while under influence. Fortunately, before it was too late, “Another Fine Navy Day” was rescued by its elegant structure, by the way it seemed to expand the story, and finally, by the best portrayal of a love triangle I have seen in a long time.

The Walking Dead – Killer Within Review

Wow, even though we’re only four episodes into season three, Killer Within had enough dramatic moments, character deaths, and tension to rival the season finale of many shows. This was the show’s first time having to bounce from one set of plotlines and characters to a completely new set. The prison side of things somewhat blew me away, but Woodbury had some problems. The show’s cold opening showing someone opening the gate was nicely done and I thought it would bring a “who done it” element to this episode, but the siren going off clearly made it seem like there was another prisoner loose, whether it be Andrew or a random survivor.

Fringe – An Origin Story Review

“An Origin Story” was one of those titles that are not easy to decipher. It might refer to how the Observers get their abilities, or to how Peter started down a reckless path, or even in a twisted way, how this might be the beginning of something far bigger than we are able to see now. No matter the meaning of its title, the episode provided riveting details on some of the Observers technologies, opening the possibility of another path to freedom than Walter’s plan, but ultimately, at its heart “An Origin Story” was about the Bishop family’s loss and how each of its members coped with it.

The Walking Dead – Walk with Me Review

Walk with Me dramatically slowed down the pace of this season in some good and bad ways. This Andrea and Michonne centric episode introduces us to Woodbury and the Governor. Well, saying this is a Michonne centric episode is a bit of a stretch.

Fringe – The Bullet That Saved the World Review

“The Bullet That Saved the World” was one of those episodes that lull you into a false sense of normalcy bordering on boredom before unleashing what it has in store. When that moment came, the story was merciless, bearing its weight on characters and on the viewers with a ruthless but logical determination. The episode wasn’t so much about the bullet in the title as it was about the people for whom it was more than a keepsake, the parents for whom the bullet was a promise for better days and the daughter for whom it was a connection to a lost paradise she would not see again.

The Walking Dead – Sick Review

The Walking Dead is having a nice streak. After a very weak first half of season two, everything after the winter finale was an improvement and now that we’re two episodes into season three, those positive changes have been enhanced even more. Sick starts right where the premiere left off. Hershel has just had his leg removed and the surviving prisoners are bewildered by what they’ve just witnessed.

Alphas – God’s Eye

“God’s Eye” featured brilliant ideas, adrenaline-fueled action scenes, touching moment, but instead of keeping things that way, it also added jarring plot holes and sprinkled the whole with some frustrating character-centric storylines. If you have read any of my recent reviews of Alphas, you know by now that I don’t particularly like the direction the show has taken in its sophomore year, a new direction that was perfectly embodied in the season finale.

Young Justice: Invasion – Before the Dawn

All praise iTunes for… not being told in time by Cartoon Network to deny us the episode we were promised! Warning. If you weren’t able to catch it, there are spoilers here.

Alphas – Need to Know

If “Need to Know” could be described with a single word, it would have to be “confusing”. Not that it was convoluted – it lacked the ambition that would have had it flirt with such a lofty sin – but simply that it assumed the viewer was comfortable or familiar with some changes that have happened in the world of Alphas. After some initial excitement at their office, our protagonists either stuck with protocol and the FBI, or followed Rosen in his darker alternative approach. None of which particularly shined until Skylar Adams showed up.
