Since premiering in 2004 in the U.K., Shameless has since become a hit show in the U.S. after its premiere on Showtime. The second version of the series premiered in 2011, but has followed the plot and characters of the first series pretty closely so far. The plot of the two shows centers around a family living in poverty, whose members are forced to deal with their constantly drunk father, Frank Gallagher, the head of the family.
With Mad Men and Breaking Bad set to sign off in the next year, is the age of the male antagonist drawing to a close? It certainly seems that way, as shows fronted by female protagonists, who embody many of the same traits as their male precursors, begin to emerge in the TV landscape. Among these new ranks are the leads in Orphan Black, American Horror Story: Asylum, Orange is the New Black, The Fall, and Top of the Lake.
With AMC’s Breaking Bad set to begin its final eight episode run, it’s time to take a quick look back at what happened during the first half of the fifth season, and speculate on where things will end up as the finale approaches.
