Trailer Tracker: Gulliver’s Travels, [Rec]2 and more

Another week, another edition of Trailer Tracker, where we at Player Affinity judge the latest trailers to hit the web with extreme prejudice. This time round we take a peek at the latest Jack Black comedy Gulliver’s Travels, wander around in the dark with the red band trailer for the sequel for cult horror film [Rec], get electric with the theatrical trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, raise our brows at the odd new teaser for Rango and finally get “flipped” with Rob Reiner’s latest.

Gulliver's Travels

A larger-than-life comedian like Jack Black is an ironic casting choice for a movie like Gulliver’s Travels, but also a solid one. A fresh adaptation of the 1728 novel where a castaway awakens on an island inhabited by tiny citizens also stars Jason Segel, Emily Blunt and Amanda Peet. As long as Black resists mugging the camera as he did in Year One this is sure to be a hit with families at Christmas time and if School of Rock showed us anything, if the material is good enough Black can appeal to more than kids.

[Rec]2

An indie darling at the time of its release (domestically that is), Spanish horror flick [Rec] gained significantly more notoriety when it was remade as Quarantine for American audiences. Following the success of the original virus-themed thriller and its reimagining, the creation of a sequel is not much in the way of a surprise. [Rec]2 has already debuted overseas to commendable reception for a horror sequel and hopefully the hype will give this foreign language feature a domestic boost.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

If you thought the first trailer for “Scott Pilgrim” was incapable of becoming more vibrantly oddball you would be dead wrong. Edgar Wright’s adaptation of the comic book looks so jittery and stylized its success in theaters is the epitome of a toss-up. Michael Cera is perfect for the role and gets to rock out and kick ass more than he has ever had the opportunity to before. Mark your calendars people because a movie like this most certainly does not swing by very often.

Rango

Are you confused? Creeped out? Intrigued? All of the above? Well you’re not alone.  You wouldn’t know it from the bizarre teaser, but Rango stars Johnny Depp in the lead voice role and directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean). The Paramount film is apparently about a household pet that ventures out on its own (presumably not that mechanical fish thing) and comes to theaters on March 18, 2011.

Flipped

Before he got overly sentimental in movies like The Bucket List or harshly parodied on South Park, Rob Reiner directed some of the most beloved and iconic movies of all time from The Princess Bride, to Stand By Me to A Few Good Men. Flipped appears to land somewhere in the middle of his filmography theme-wise and tells the story of an eight grader who, against his better judgement, begins to have feelings for the girl next door much to the chagrin of his classmates. You may not have heard of this movie before, but it comes out just around the corner on August 6.
