Those who are actually werewolves (and seeking sanctuary) may be interested in Cameron Crowe’s latest, We Bought a Zoo with Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and rising star Elle Fanning. Then, for you fellas after you wipe away that spittle comes Goon, a hockey flick that isn’t so much an inspirational sports tale as it is a peak at those roughians that make the blood splatter. Finally, we have the red band trailer for an Indonesian action thriller called The Raid, which follows 20 elite cops as they take down a criminal stronghold with badass side effects. We’re all about shock and awe on Player Affinity – it’s Trailer Tracker.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part I

About as far from the widespread masses' cup of tea as one could envision, it is nonetheless important to take a peak at the clip for a film that is the biggest cinematic event on the horizon. Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 1, this time helmed by Bill Condon, reunites the cast of the original three films, of course including everyone’s favourite love-triangle-trio Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart (Sarcasm? You be the judge). As events come to cessation, pale-faced Bella and sparkly-faced Edward are wed, much to the disdain of brooding (and likely shirtless) werewolf Jacob. The happy proceedings are thrown into turmoil not soon afterwards as Bella becomes pregnant with a half-vampire, half-human child; an announcement not held in very high regards by enemies of the family.

Not only has the success of “Twilight” been unmatched before considering its subject matter and target audience, but also viewers have stuck with the series, elevating it to one of the biggest international of all time in just a few short years. I like to look at the existence of these films with a smirk — witnessing truckloads of hate clash with hoards of screeching tweens. I have no love lost for “Twilight,” but at the same time no direct ill will.  The movies exist, so do I, case closed. These movies are not meant for me. Regardless of your position for these adaptations, or if you side with Team Edward or Team Jacob, look out for Nov. 18, because its coming no matter.

We Bought a Zoo

After a six-year hiatus from feature films, Cameron Crowe returns with We Bought a Zoo, based on the true-to-life memoirs of Benjamin Mee, an author who after facing a mid-life crisis/epiphany moved to England and bought a dilapidated zoo. The location has been changed to Southern California in this adaptation with Matt Damon joining Scarlet Johansson, Thomas Haden Church and Elle Fanning (coming off a starring role in Super 8) in the dramedy. Judging on the true-life story centered around a gang of threatened animals, “Zoo” could have breakout hit potential among the ladies and families after it debuts this upcoming holiday season. The trailer screams melodrama, but frankly Crowe has made his career in using his screenwriting skills and ability to direct actors to transcend that type of material.

Goon

Who doesn’t like a good hockey brawl? Gloves tossed, jerseys …umm jerseyed and blood is hopefully split. The latest comedy from scribe Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Pineapple Express), the title refers to semi-pro hockey player Doug Glatt played by Sean William Scott. A former bouncer regarded as a loser by his family, he uses his more aggressive skills to help his team to victory. Jay Baruchel also stars, as does Liev Schreiber as the handlebar-stashed bruiser from an opposing team.  The trailer looks very funny and the team behind this film have made some hilarious and ultimately touching comedies centered around subject matter that otherwise seems quite broad. Comparisons to Slap Shot will be unavoidable, but frankly there are not enough hockey flicks out there to satisfy this Canuck.

The Raid

Recalling recent foreign action flicks such as Elite Squad and District B13, The Raid follows a group of elite officers as they lay siege to a criminal stronghold in a high rise, previously thought impenetrable. From Indonesia, the red-band trailer promises a gritty blend of gunfire and martial arts (and frankly not much else), but don’t think this material is going the way of hard-hitting. Interestingly, director Gareth Evans is Welsh, but including The Raid has directed two feature martial arts films with casts from the Far East. What this tells me is that the man must be an excellent director of this type of action and a penchant for martial arts, a suspicion that was confirmed when I investigated further. His debut short was a samurai film and is also currently shooting a documentary on Indonesian martial arts style Pencak Silat. Sounds like a cool dude and looks like a potentially awesome movie as well.
