Cancelled TV Shows – A Tribute To The Fallen

Here at PlayerAffinityTV, we’re a sentimental bunch of nerds who have made it our collective mission in life to keep you informed about the best that television has to offer. Networks are constantly bringing in new shows, or in some cases old shows with a shiny new coat to try and pull the wool over our eyes. Spending countless hours sitting in front of our television screens has given us the ability to distinguish between the good, the bad, & the ugly. But what happens when our opinion doesn’t matter? What happens when our favorite shows get inexplicably cancelled and buried into eternal oblivion? Do we revolt? Do we petition Sam Fisher, Commander Shepard, and Master Chief to go kick their collective asses, because no one else will take us seriously? No. We’re better than that — right? The year is now 2012 and I found myself reminiscing about the TV shows that were never really given a fair chance to flex their muscles and show us what they really had to offer. The advent of reality TV (also known as “the scum of television”) has seriously deprived genuinely promising TV shows the opportunity to garner a bigger audience. And without the numbers to show for it, shows that deserve a second chance don’t usually get one. Some of the following shows have been dropped over the years in the meanest way possible, but let’s take this opportunity to give them the proper accolades they so richly deserve:

Giancarlo Esposito Cast in J.J. Abrams Pilot

Veteran actor and all-round nice guy Giancarlo Esposito has been cast in J.J Abrams’ new pilot Revolution. The Breaking Bad star, who captivated audiences with his ridiculously awesome portrayal of Gustavo “Gus” Fring, will co-star in the project along with Tracy Spiradakos, Graham Rogers, and Anna Lise Phillips. Revolution is described as an action-packed sci-fi drama (how’s that for a genre cocktail?) that follows the lives of a group of individuals struggling to survive and re-unite with their loved ones in a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously ceased to exist. The pilot, which was greenlit by NBC about a month ago, will be written by Supernatural creator Eric Kripke and directed by Iron Man‘s Jon Favreau, with Abrams & Fringe‘s Bryan Burk serving as executive producers. Esposito will play a character named Captain Neville in the pilot, who is described as a “hard-as-steel military man with a genteel southern manner who may not always be what he seems.”

MGM Seeks a New Robocop in Joel Kinnaman

The human half of the Robocop remake equation has been a question for some time, but MGM is hoping to move the project forward by offering Joel Kinnaman the title role. The news comes nearly a year after it was announced that the film would be helmed by José Padilha, director of the Brazilian action film The Elite Squad

Spartacus: Vengeance – Libertus

Before I begin my review about this week’s episode of Spartacus: Vengeance, give me a few seconds while I remove my foot from my mouth after the comments I made last week. After Spartacus’ plan to extract Naevia from the mines completely backfired, an even more ambitious plan to save Crixus & Oenomaus seemed like the dumbest thing to do… or so some of us thought. The writers made me eat my own words this week by not only giving us the BEST episode of the season (and possibly the series), but by also showing us that when Spartacus and his band of gladiators really apply themselves, the very foundation of Rome is at risk of crumbling beneath their feet. “Libertus” was an episode that had something for fans & critics alike —- universal agreement that this show is not messing around. Spartacus: Vengeance is an exotic masterpiece that stands in a league of its own, and “Libertus” was a prime example of why that is so. It isn’t often that we’re in a position to summarize an episode with a single word, but “Libertus” was EPIC.

New Game of Thrones Trailer Released

Prepare to have your minds blown! HBO released the second official trailer for Game of Thrones season two via its streaming service, HBO GO. Although season two of the series will premiere on April 1st, the network has been keeping the public up to date regarding recent developments on the show. Game of Thrones was a massive success last year and the upcoming season promises to exceed our wildest expectations. The show, which already flaunts an impressive cast to begin with (despite Sean Bean’s exit), will have additional characters introduced this season including Stephen Dillane as Stannis Baratheon, Liam Cunningham as Ser Davos Seaworth, Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth, and Carice van Houten as Melisandre.

Fringe – The End of All Things

“The End of All Things” might have been the end for September the observer, but it was certainly the beginning of many things as far as the fourth season story arc and to some extent the overall series narrative are concerned. It managed that by tackling long standing questions with some revelations that raised new questions. Heavily steeped in the series mythology, the story somewhat left its options open on the subject of timelines by pushing Peter after what, to me at least, felt like a red herring. Abducted at the end of the previous episode, Olivia was at the center of the story designed to advance the overall narrative. Right at the beginning, she finds herself locked in a room with Nina Sharp who explains she has been held against her will for several weeks now. Enters David Robert Jones who would like to “activate” Olivia by forcing her to switch on a few lights simply with her mind: it would seem Mr. Jones, even across timelines, is predictable that way. While all this is happening, the Fringe division is holding another Nina Sharp captive, suspicious as they are that she is responsible for dosing Olivia with cortexiphan. They have nothing much to cling on until the wounded September appears in the lab.

30 Rock – Leap Day

It’s the most important day in four years: Leap Day is coming! And we celebrate it properly with wearing blue and yellow along with Leap Day William. I don’t know exactly what the point of this episode was, except to make us realize that we might be in need of better holidays and that Steve Buscemi is as irrelevant to this show behind the camera as he is in front of it. You belong to the 1920’s now, Steve. Though any national day of celebrations that forces you to cry for candy and has Kenneth walking around in a bald cap is a solid contender for my party list, but the episode was hardly as funny as it could have been.
