Falling Skies – The Price of Greatness

After the season’s low point last week, it seemed the show had nowhere else to go but up, which it did, but the improvement was barely noticeable. “The Price of Greatness” was far from being as engrossing as its title. The episode oversimplified the making of a “new” nation to allow its main character to shine, painted such a sharp contrast between the rest of the world and the 2nd Massachusetts as to irritate anyone with a shred of skepticism, and was so predictable it undercut its own pizzazz.

CBS ‘Elementary’ New On-Air Promos

CBS has just launched an on-air campaign promoting its new fall show, Elementary. The upcoming series is a contemporary update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories, this time set in the United States. Jonny Lee Miller (who is British) stars as Holmes and Lucy Liu as Watson.

“Alpha Dogs” introduced us to an engaging new character and took us on a fascinating journey into Stanton Parish’s past. Kat, the newcomer, helped open a new window into the world of alphas, and Parish left breadcrumbs for Rosen to find in an episode where the case was, once again, not designed to stand out on its own.

Falling Skies – Death March

Since the beginning of its second season, Falling Skies has been much better than last year’s introductory season. That is, until “Death March.” The episode was a collection of storylines that mostly failed to hit their marks, and although a couple of them showed some promise, the story was dragged down by clichés.

Hulu Plus rolled out to Apple TV. Syfy hands out a pilot to High Moon, a sci-fi project based on John Christopher’s 1969 young adult novel, “The Lotus Caves.” Fox turns to M. Night Shyamalan and the life-beyond-death project, Proof. Shiri Appleby and Mark Valley are cast in HBO’s Girls and ABC’s Body of Proof, respectively.

‘Game of Thrones’ Honored at the TCA Awards

On Saturday, July 28, the Television Critics Association (TCA) honored television’s most outstanding programs in 12 categories. HBO’s critically-acclaimed Game of Thrones was crowned “Program of the Year,” and Showtime’s Homeland was named “Outstanding New Program,” an honored bestowed to Game of Thrones in 2011.
