Despite earlier reports, Stephen Sommers won’t be coming back to shoot the sequel to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
The Los Angeles Times’ 24 Frames blog has learned that other directors have been approached to take charge of the sequel even though Sommers had been attached to continue with the franchise.
Despite the film’s box office success, “Cobra” was a major flop with the critics. The film was bound for a relatively impressive box office success regardless of its actual merit, but Paramount probably wasn’t counting on the overwhelmingly disastrous reception from a quality standpoint. There is no word yet on who might be replacing Sommers.
Personally, this is some of the most exciting film-related news that I’ve heard in a long time and easily gives me something to look forward to. “Cobra” might just be one of the most abysmal motion pictures of the last decade, so throwing someone other than Sommers into the director’s chair isn’t exactly a bad decision.
Who do you think should take his place as director?
