Sony acquire the rights for Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Fire and Ice’
"Winter is coming"
Sony Pictures have had a torrid time recently with the cyber-attack forcing them to
cancel The Interview's worldwide release. But the show must go on and
Deadline have had the exclusive that they have brought the rights to Robert Rodriguez's planned live-action version of
Fire and Ice.
Fire and Ice is a cult fantasy animated movie from Ralph Bakshi, the director of
Fritz the Cat and the animated version of
The Lord of the Rings and animated by Frank Frazetta. The plot of
Fire and Ice is a village is destroyed by the Ice Lord Nekron and the lone survivor Larn has to rescue the kidnapped Princess Teegra.
Rodriguez has been developing the project independently with Bold Films but felt he needed the backing of a major studio to make a bigger movie. Producer Michael De Luca broker the deal with Sony with the aim of making a franchise. There is a void in the fantasy genre with
The Hobbit Trilogy ending and Sony want to stake their claim.
