Tactile Gaming Vest, feel the pain!

Gaming interfaces have come a long way since the early days of simple polygons, pixels, and two buttoned joysticks. Now users have many options of interacting with games. From Nintendo’s motion controller and touch screen devices, Microsoft’s Project Natal (which allows the user to use their body as a controller), and now thanks to a group of inventors from the University of Pennsylvania; we may have the next leap in gaming technology called The Tactile Gaming Vest.

Happy Town – In This Home on Ice

Let’s get one thing straight before talking about “Happy Town”:  it’s far from a happy place.  Of course, the dozens of commercials that air before and after every show on ABC have made that abundantly clear, but for a show labeled “Happy Town,” the show starts off on a dark and macabre note and doesn’t let up for the next hour.  Comparisons between this show, David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks” and Lynch’s feature film “Blue Velvet” will likely arise as the show goes on, mostly because they all revolve around the idea of a quaint, innocent town with a gritty underworld filled with secrets that nobody knows about.  However, “Happy Town” struggles a little bit out of the gate, and with only eight episodes to attract an audience, the show will have to work double time to make up for its errors.

Green Lantern #53

The Blackest Night has ended, evil has been vanquished and now the Brightest Day begins. With every question that Geoff Johns (Blackest Night, Flash) has answered with the Blackest Night series there won’t be any other mysteries left for Green Lantern or the DC universe. Fear not, there’s actually a bigger mystery in the works now.

We begin with Hector Hammond, a man who looks a little like Sinestro, if Sinestro was a bobble head. He’s speaking with someone telepathically on the Planet Ryut in the lost section of the universe. Our mystery person looks a lot like a Guardian but their face and body are hidden from the reader. They do however have their ankles bound with a green chain. The mystery person reveals they protected the universe for the Guardians before the Green Lantern Corps and even before the Manhunters, We are left with an image of pillars representing the seven Corps and Parallax chained to the Fear pillar.

First 3D Gaming Summit

I’m sure if anyone has been keeping up with news about gaming, or have gone to the movies recently, they have heard of or seen the new trend that’s been sweeping the industry… 3D. While it’s a really cool idea, this technology has been causing some issues among consumers and the gaming industry. For consumers it’s the idea of having to wear glasses for playing games, which some people consider to just look ridiculous and cause eye strain. The bigger issue though is price; the average 3D television costs around $8,000, that’s a pretty penny. The only way for this new technology to take off is for all of the gaming industries to get together and discuss the possible future for this new concept… if there even is one. This is exactly what they did when they met in Los Angeles for the first 3D Gaming Summit.

A few major gaming companies showed up to show off what they have come up with, as well as talk about all of the issues, and advantages that 3D gaming can bring to the industry. Sony and Nvidia made an appearance in this event and showed off all of the technology they have come up with. They showed up with Gran Turismo, MLB 10 the Show, Everquest II, Just Cause 2, and Metro 2033. They all used a special kind of glasses that would catch all of the images on the screen, that can’t be seen normally that are flashed and then put them into the view of your eye, creating what they called an “impressive 3D effect”.  The idea of creating a high quality 3D image this way is really intriguing, but it’s still in its early stages of development and as of right now it’s too expensive for the average consumer to buy.  Since, it also requires a special kind of monitor as well as the glasses. The only game that was displayed that didn’t require a special kind of powered glasses was Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Michael Ironside Interview

From Top Gun, Total Recall, Starships Troopers, Free Willy, and many more, Michael Ironside always seems to find an audience no matter what role he accepts. Now, he plays Chief Bannen, a police chief with a mobster brother and con artist son, in the new web series The Bannen Way over at Crackle.com from Sony Pictures. Seemingly being on top of the New Media game, I also spoke to him about his decision to reprise his role as Sam Fisher in the popular Splinter Cell video game series, with the 5th installment ready to land in stores in late April 2010, and also got him to divulge about his childhood love of Superman and how it helped lead him to voiceover work as one of the Man of Steel’s most nefarious enemies, Darkseid.
