E3 ’10: Day 1 Video Analysis

Ray continues his E3 escapades, going from booth to booth, playing game after game and finding everything he can. Like some of the delusional, Ray still has hope for the latest Sonic game for the Wii, Sonic Colors. Ah, all Sonic fans are hamsters on a cyclical wheel of false hope and pitiful optimism, which is also known as the Sonic Cycle.

That isn’t all, though. Take a few minutes to check out what Ray’s been doing as a one-man crew.

Move over Killzone and Crysis, Rage is here

In the last few years certain technical benchmarks have been surpassed. The biggest was done by Crysis, which combined unbelievable graphics with sandbox gameplay to create a phenomenal game. It was a technical marvel past its graphics too, since it had extremely dynamic physics and destructible environments. The next big benchmark was set by Killzone, which had great graphics and… well that’s about it, but it sure did look pretty. With both of their sequels being shown at E3 this year, they’re still stunningly good looking games, but are they at the very top anymore? No, if you ask me. Id’s Rage has clawed its way to the top. So far, it’s the close as we’ve come to the coveted “Pixar quality graphics”.

E3 ’10: Metroid: Other M Gameplay Trailer

The latest footage of Metroid: Other M surfaced in Nintendo’s press conference today, displaying more of this atypical Metroid game from Team Ninja.

Well, atypical might not be the right word for this trailer, at least, which emphasized mood, isolation and atmosphere above all else. Whereas the trailers before tended to show off the narrative and the bombastic, beat ’em up gameplay, this trailer channeled the elements of Metroid that make fans go out. I know I kind of did.

Donkey Kong Country Returns + Video Footage

You would not be blamed if you came away from the previous couple E3’s feeling a little bored with Nintendo. With titles like Wii Fit, Wii Music and the unveiling of the Vitality Sensor Nintendo did not make themselves any friends with the “hardcore” gaming community.

However, Nintendo seems to be making a strong attempt to change all of that. Today, not only have we seen new installments in the Kid Icarus, Zelda, and Kirby series, but now a return to Donkey Kong Country as well.

E3 ’10: Nintendo 3DS Details

It became clear why Nintendo decided to extend its usual conference to two whole hours. The first-half was devoted to Wii and DS software and numbers to please shareholders, while the second-half was all about Nintendo’s next big handheld, the 3DS.

Sporting a design similar to a DSi, the 3DS is the new and true successor to the DS line of handhelds. The biggest element of the 3DS are the 3D capabilities that don’t depend on glasses. Just you, the handheld and the games, impressions on the 3D functionality are unanimously positive. It’s working and apparently, it’s kind of really awesome. It’s also completely optional, as it comes with a 3D slider that lets you adjust just how 3D you want it to be.
