True Blood – Fresh Blood

True Blood is like an incredibly convincing transvestite. On the outside it looks great and the teasing promises of a climactic event are incredibly exciting. However, when you get to the crunch, all you’re left with is a bunch of bits you didn’t ask for and a confusing moment when you decide whether or not to continue.

The Last Exorcism Review

Since The Exorcist debuted in 1973, no film about the devil has made such a lasting impression. The Exorcism of Emily Rose was a demure attempt, telling of the fabled possession in flashbacks. It was an effort, but not a memorable one. The Last Exorcism does not outdo The Exorcist nor does it fail at grasping attentionIt sits comfortably on the fence for the majority of the film, bringing its own flair and folly to the subject.

Takers Review

Envision a GQ ad on speed with a dash of The Italian Job and you will have a good idea of what Takers has to offer. Though a slick and mostly kinetic heist flick, there is not a single frame of the entire running length that has not been borrowed from another, usually better, film. I don’t consider it a spoiler to reveal that the structure of the central robbery is identical to that of The Italian Job, down to the street-erupting armoured car interception and traffic light tampering. You would think that with all the talent drifting through Hollywood that they could come up with an original caper at least. Actually, never mind.

Leverage – The Rashomon Job

Since it began, Leverage has been a fun show about a group of slick thieves planning and executing expertly crafted heists.  It’s damn entertaining stuff, except there are always those victims weighing it down.  Every episode begins with someone being hurt or robbed or even killed, so our group can later on help them out.  It’s a fine concept, but those scenes with the victims are always done in such a serious, heavy-handed way that it seems like you’re watching a different show entirely.  If I wanted to be taught “inspirational” lessons by my television shows, I’d be watching reruns of 7th Heaven, not a show about thieves and con artists.

New Blood Stone Trailer

Activision has released a new trailer for the upcoming James Bond adventure Blood Stone. Due to MGM’s money troubles, the 23rd Bond movie is stuck in development, therefore Blood Stonewill not be a tie-in, but rather will be a standalone story – the next chapter in the Bond saga.

The game, a third-person shooter, will star Daniel Craig as 007 and British singer Joss Stone as socialite Nicole Hunter, as they hunt down a missing researcher. The game will feature a global conspiracy involving the UK’s secret biochemical weapons program, and a story stretching across five different locations, including Istanbul (as featured in the new trailer), Athens, Monaco, Bangkok and Siberia.

True Blood – I Smell a Rat

Last week ended with one of the most explosive ends to any episode in the history of… ever. Russell Edgington ripped the spine from a news reporter live on air and basically declared war on the Human race. The latest episode fails to capitalize on this, but we do finally find out what the hell Sookie is.

Gaming From Across the Pond 08.21.10

Hello fellow gamers and welcome to another week of ranting from the PC Department’s pet Brit. Some of you may have read a feature this week on games that sit on our shelf and never get played, if not check it out. My game chosen was a Settlers game, but it got me thinking about the original and how much fun I had with that game, even though the graphics where appalling by today’s standards. So my question is how important are the graphics?

Though I could never actually say what my ten favourite games are, or put them in order, I do know a few which would definitely be included: The original Command and ConquerRed Alert,StarCraft (including Broodwar) and Monkey Island 1 and 2 for example. The hours I spent on these games are far larger than the time I have spent on any other game (though maybe notWorld of WarCraft). My point is that even though these games had graphics that can be replicated in flash games now, they were still awesome. The game play was great, the storyline fantastic and the mechanics brilliant.
