Epic and EA Takes A Huge Stab At CoD?

I stumbled upon on this video while browsing my usual forums. As far as I can tell, it is legit and not a fan made parody. If you don’t want to watch the video (which you should), it’s basically EA and Epic taking a huge dig at the modern war genre of first-person shooters. It puts Bulletstorm forward as a homage to much older frag-fest shooters like Quake and Unreal Tournament.

Shooters have definitely gone for a more realistic tone in recent years. This video is a pretty huge and public way to take a dig at a franchise if it turns out to be legit. But what do you think? Have EA and Epic bitten off more than they can chew, or have they hit the nail well and truly on its head? Bulletstorm is now only a few weeks away from release, and with Duke Nukem Forever coming out in May, it’s possible that these games could have a pretty big impact on the first-person shooter genre.

Trailer Tracker: Bridesmaids, The Conspirator and more

Our featured clip this week is Bridesmaids, the inappropriately-themed farce sporting a number of SNL veterans. Could this be the girlie cure for The Hangover and the frequent Apatow fare? In addition, we have the Robert Redford directed The Conspirator, which explores complex themes regarding the Lincoln assassination, Peep Worldwith talents including Dexter’s Michael C. Hall, the utterly bizarre but equally intriguing Rubber and finally a fraternity gets the dramatic treatment in Brotherhood. Get ready to pledge — its Trailer Tracker.

Durarara! Episode 2 – Highly Unpredictable

The second episode is a bit different from the first. The pacing changes as does the narrator. This time we have the voice of the Black Rider narrating as she unveils the events that we weren’t privy to in the last episode. Events like, what happened to the girl she saved once she was dropped off? The episode works to wrap up a lot of questions and scenes unanswered in the first episode and make both episodes stronger because of it.

It’s the first day of school and Mikado Ryugamine is introduced to the class as a new transfer along with the girl that was saved by the Black Rider. A third girl with glasses is introduced by the name of Anri Sonohara. It becomes very apparent that Mikado has interest in her as he can’t seem to look away. The narrator then focuses on the girl who she saved the night before.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. Duke Nukem Mashup

The new Duke Nukem Forever trailer is pretty badass, and so is Scott Pilgrim. What happens when you combine the two is magic beyond your wildest dreams. The mashup is made by Youtube user Crocodude and is easily the best Duke Nukem crossover I’ve ever seen.

 Here’s the awesome video:

Battlestar Galactica MMO Enters Open Beta Soon

With the recent and horribly unjust cancelation os Caprica, Battlestar Galactica fans have been left without a fix of their favorite sci-fi franchise.  Fortunately, a new MMO based on the series has been in development for a while, and it will hit open beta on February 8th.  Battlestar Galactica: Online will be a 3-D space shooter which lets players choose to play as a Cylon, or human to join in large-scale space battles.

The Cape – Dice

This week The Cape introduced a new feature: The Celebrity Guest Villain!  Back in the 60’s, the old Batman show used to hire well-known actors to play the weekly bad guy, and it was one of the most entertaining running gags on the show.  Now The Cape has hired its first recognizable face for a villain: Meena Suvari as “Dice”.  Hopefully the producers will make this a regular event, because fleshing out the cast with some extra talent will help things out, and the show certainly needs someone more interesting for The Cape to fight than his regular nemesis Chess.

Bulletstorm Preview

One of the more unique titles coming out in the next month is Electronic Arts’ Bulletstorm, a creativity-based first person shooter by developers People Can Fly and Epic Games. Ironically, Bulletstorm isn’t all about guns. Rather than pushing forward what has become an exercise in repetition, Bulletstorm changes the goals of a FPS from the standard “shoot everything you see before you die” to a whole new paradigm: Skillshots. Itself a tongue-in-cheek title with overlarge weapons and cartoony effects, Bulletstorm rewards players by finishing off enemies as creatively as possible be it from kicking them into electric fences to juggling them off a cliff. With the focus taken off clearing stages of enemies and onto the Skillshots, Bulletstorm has the chance to innovate the genre above convention.

World Of Tanks In Open Beta

In online games, “Tank” usually means a warrior whose job is to soak up damage and hold enemy Aggro while the mages blast away.  Well there’s a new MMO where everyone’s a tank, and they don’t need no squishy mages to do the damage dealing!

Weekend Deals Friday January 28

Yesterday I remarked that there was a bit of a trend for Digital Distributors who seem to love discounting the Red Faction franchise; today that continues with Onlive who are selling Red Faction: Guerrilla for five dollars today only.  They’ll have a different Daily Deal all weekend, tomorrow it will be Metro 2033, and Sunday it will be Darksiders.  They aren’t revealing the prices until the day of, so check back with them each day if you’re an Onlive user.
