Alice: Madness Returns – Preview

There’s one thing that hardcore action gamers agree on:  We need more games where the main character is a little girl in a frilly dress.  It’s been over ten years since shooter fans last got to run around as Alice in the original American McGee’s Alice, and it’s high time that pinafores and petticoats were brought back to the third-person shooter genre.  Fortunately, we won’t have to wait much longer for the chance to kill things at a tea party, because Alice: Madness Returns comes out in a few weeks.

30 Rock – 100

30 Rock celebrated its 100th episode with a giant-sized two-part episode in which TGS, the show-within-the-show also celebrates its 100th episode.  Although it was a cameo-filled extravaganza, it was also partly a clips show that recycled footage from the previous five seasons.  This raises the question as to what purpose a “Clips Show” serves in the age of Hulu and You tube.

The Sounds of “Human Revolution”

Denying
the importance of a solid, well-composed musical score in modern
games is blatant ignorance. Soundtracks and scores have become one of
the most imperative and vital components in today’s video games.
Audio is key to setting the right mood for a game, and without it
players can feel disconnected from the experience. An otherwise
silent game trailer or scripted sequence can be brought to life with
a fitting symphony and in-game events can be heavily influenced by a
myriad of sound bytes or audio clips. Needless to say if you’re a
true gamer, one who appreciates a well-written story and a
carefully-crafted visual design, then you are probably grateful for
the amount of time and effort that goes into creating a rich
atmosphere through sound. This is no easy task of course, as today’s
game composers must traverse many obstacles while remaining as
original as possible.

Community – Paradigms of Human Memory

Although
the concept of filler episodes was something that I was aware of, I’d
never really come across one that wasn’t directly referencing that it
was one until this week’s episode of Community. “Paradigms of
Human Memory,” in stark contrast to last week’s “Competitive Wine
Tasting,” sees just about nothing happening whilst the study group
reflects on some previously unseen events from the past year that have
led them to where they are today.

Trailer Tracker: Rise of the Planet of the Apes and More

Get your hands of my
trailer, you damn dirty ape! Our featured trailer this week, is the awkwardly
titled Rise of the Planet of the Apes
starring Andy Serkis and James Franco as ape and human respectively. Taylor
Lautner deviates from his shirtless Twilight origins to a likely shirtless
follow-up in Abduction, a Taken-inspired thriller. The zombie
genre gets crossed with the now-popular vampire genre in the creepy indie
horror flick,
Stake Land
and finally Emma Stone goes back to the less-than-accepting days of the 1960’s
exploring African American maids working in white households in
Jackson, Mississippi.
We’re very accepting here on Player Affinity, let’s all hold hands and watch
some great clips, it’s Trailer Tracker.

Battlefield 3 Extended Trailer Impressions

EA has recently released a full 12 minute trailer of all the gameplay from the Fault Line demo. This is, essentially, a compilation of all of the Fault Line episodes, with more gameplay in between each. There are still cuts, but they are far less significant than before. All the previous Fault Line episodes added up to a time of around 9 minutes, while this extended trailer adds about 2 and a half minutes in total.

30 Rock – I Heart Connecticut

This has been a very inconsistent season for 30 Rock; there have been plenty of great episodes, like the reality parody “Queen of Jordan”, but also many mediocre ones as well.  30 Rock is still one of the best comedies out there, even when it has a subpar show like this week.  As always, there are lots of isolated funny moments, and witty lines, but the episode doesn’t have much to offer outside of the occasional random comedy spike.

Environments of Resistance 3

Along
with the new Ratchet & Clank title, Insomniac Games’
upcoming third installment to the popular Resistance series
has seen yet another media preview. On April 12 a large group of both
American and European press members in Los Angeles were treated to a
presentation of a new single-player area, multiplayer map, and weapon
that would be featured in the upcoming Resistance 3
game. Along with this fresh material, the video showing the boat
segment along the Mississippi River was also shown. Both of these
levels which are featured in the game’s single-player campaign
feature characters Joseph Capelli and Dr. Malikov as they try to ward
off the Chimeran threat; show some of the new game elements such as
the “weapon wheel” and HUD enhancements.

New Backbreaker Game Announced, Tackle Alley Returns

Yesterday I reported that Natural Motion and 505 Games had teased a new Backbreaker game. Today they made it official by announcing that the new Backbreaker game will be titled Backbreaker: Vengeance and will be exclulsive to Xbox Live Arcade.

Backbreaker: Vengeance takes the intensity and AAA appeal of the originalBackbreaker Football console game and combines it with the pick-up-and-play nature of the multi-million selling iPhone games to create a whole new one-of-a-kind sports experience for digital download on Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360. It takes as its inspiration the wildly popular “Tackle Alley” mini-game in Backbreaker Football to deliver an all-new arcade slant on football.”
