Drums #1 – Advanced Review

This
story is a lie. Well most stories are anyway, but the creators of this
book are making sure you know this. Why? The subject matter of Drums
is so complex that to explain everything as it is would take an
encyclopedia to explain one of the three religions that the title
presents. But they accept this fact and say, “Hey bare with us, this is
not an accurate representation of real facts but a layman’s way to tell
an entertaining story based on all of these religions.” You see
Santeria, Palo Mayombe and Candomble are all derived from the Yoruba
tradition and all of them are very real religions. But the mainstream
tends to confuse them with voodoo or satanism. Drums is a title that takes the source material seriously. Here they represent this with care, with detailed and fictional liberties.

DVD/Blu-ray DISCussion (New for 5.17.11)

It
is a strange week of DVD and Blu-ray releases because plenty were
released, but none are truly remarkable. The best choices that the
Player Affinity staff can recommend are The Hustler and Beverly Hills Cop.
Italian cinema is very well represented but France and Japan also have
offerings this week. If you are looking for something new then your best
bet is either The Mechanic or Thor: Tales of Asgard.

Play Gotham: Impostors – Read Batman: Impostors

In Gotham Imposters, Teams of players square off as either Batman or
Joker impostors, creating their own customized takes on the characters’ iconic costumes
and doing battle in the streets of Gotham City. Pretty awesome, but if
you’ve read you have already read Detective Comics 867 through 870. The
four-issue story Batman: Impostors features a plot inspired by an early concept for the upcoming game.

Written by David Hine with art by the fantastic Scott McDaniel, Batman: Impostors
opens with a Jokerz flash mob descending upon an upscale shopping mall.
There’s a new highly-addictive drug on the streets that gives users a
rictus grin and the urge to create mayhem. It’s a variant of the Joker’s
deadly laughing gas, only without the active killing ingredient.

Smallville – Finale

With only one exception, all major characters that ever appeared on Smallville
were brought back for the series finale. The 2-hour episode first
reminded us why we cared for those characters in the first place. It
then tied some loose ends before (and after) leading us through an epic
and breathtaking — even if slightly imperfect — ending to the saga.

I
think any modern Superman story is bound to put Lois at the center.
It’s a sign of the times and a good one, too. Before this ultimate
episode, the series had already established Lois and Clark were made for
each other, so bringing Lana back would not have been helpful and could
have provided an unwelcome soap angle to a story that already had a lot
going on. That is why I think keeping Lana away made absolute sense. I
liked Chloe and Oliver discussing their own wedding and defining their
relationship without any of the angst that seemed to surround it lately.
The steps taken to bring Lois to reason and rein in Clark — who was
himself starting to doubt — provided for truly beautiful moments and
remarkable dialogues. Clark (to Lois): “You’re not in my way, Lois.
You’re by my side.” I think they did well to take the time to sort
things out. It ultimately gave us the closed-door scene which was one of
the best ever between the two. Welling was good but Durance was simply
perfect in a scene that summed up what Smallville has done with
these two characters over the years. One of my favorite scenes in the
whole episode was the close-up of Lois’s vows. The contrast between her
blatantly unfinished vows and Clark’s perfectly formatted piece spoke
volumes on the differences that make them such a good match.

Sony Now Restoring Online Services

After a
3-week outage, Sony has finally started restoring PlayStation online
services in phases, and will continue their efforts worldwide until
the systems are fully operational. It could take until the end of the
month to fully restore PSN, PlayStation Store, Qriocity and other
services to all its customers, but all U.S. states and other regions of
the world should be seeing partial restoration as the result of phase
one. Sony has been updating a set of map graphics which show the
areas where service is live, along with web updates, and the United
States is now in the green zone. As announced prior to restoration,
all users will be required to download a firmware update and to
change their passwords in order to connect to the servers. This comes
as the first step in ensuring data security and protecting user
information.
