This week I’ll chip in my thoughts on Tower Heist while turning my gaze to George
Clooney’s political thriller The Ides of
March. Capping off the four clips this week will
be Margin Call, a true-to-events Wall Street tale and a WWII dog-fighting drama Red
Tails. .
Visually stunning from the very beginning, El Shaddai, scheduled for August 16 release, is a game that appears to have innovation and imagination. From the moment you start the game, the vibrant colors and unique design immediately grabs your attention.
Despite the overwhelming disappointment of Green Lantern, led by Ryan Reynolds as the titular Justice League member, WB does in factwant Hal Jordan’s story to continue, albeit with a different director. There’s also a desire for an “edgier and darker” script.
One of the films that caught our attention at Comic-Con last weekend was Andrew Niccol‘s upcoming sci-fi thriller In Time. The Gattaca and Lord of War director
premiered an extended trailer-like clip at the convention, but if
you’re not one for overexposure, perhaps this will be more to your
taste.
Will (Justin Timberlake) lives in the
late 21st Century when time (to live) has become the major form of
currency. People stop aging at 25 and then have only a year left to
live. Unless, of course, they buy more time. Will works a blue-collar
job just to ensure he has enough minutes to live to the next day, but
when he saves a “wealthy” man from some crooks, he inherits over a
century of time, time that comes with consequences.
Trailer Tracker to J-27;
it’s a hit! Our featured trailer this week is the mega-budgeted “adaptation” of
the Milton Bradley board game starring Liam Neeson and Taylor Kitsch, directed
by Peter Berg whereby an armada of ships does battle with a sea-bound alien
race (no, I’m not shitting you).
With the recent screening of the pilot
episode of Alcatraz at Comic-Con 2011, many are wondering that
very thing. Only a few months past the one year anniversary of Lost
ending, it seems like fans have already been clamoring for ages for a
show to take its place. Will Alcatraz be the series to do it?
Lets find out, and take a closer look at this new series that is
already generating buzz, just by its connections to one of the most
discussed television series in recent history.
Before we get into what Alcatraz
might be, let’s take a look at what it is. The plot centers around a
group of over three hundred inmates and guards disappearing from the
infamous prison in 1963. As they begin to reappear decades later in the present,
none of them have aged a day. A team is quickly formed to find all
of those missing, while also investigating what caused the
phenomenon. The series will be set up in a “Prisoner of the Week”
style, with each episode dedicated to tracking down one of the time
jumping prisoners. The mystery behind how and why these men traveled
nearly fifty years into the future will also provide an arcing plot
running throughout.

Player Affinity never rests
when it comes to trailers and thanks to San Diego’s Comic-Con a good chunk of
new and interesting clips were revealed, some of which so cool we thought they
deserved their own edition. First we have In
Time, the sci-fi action thriller starring Justin Timberlake in a world
where longevity is more valuable than gold, then Haywire, Steven Soderbergh’s pissed-off-chick-on-a-mission revenge
flick. The out-of-nowhere angle comes from the independent effort Knights of Badassdom, and finally we
recap on some already featured trailers that show promising new life. We’ve included
the
award winner Drive and the
soon-to-be-upon-us Rise of the Planet of
the Apes. There’s no monkey business when it comes to trailers, it’s
Comic-Con.
Last week’s True Blood
was probably the worst episode in the show’s history. With basically
nothing at all happening and avenue upon avenue of potential being
closed, I was less than interested in seeing what the vampire drama had
in store on Sunday. Much to my surprise “Me and the Devil” didn’t suck,
but it was still only a stepping stone towards the level that the show
needs to be at to make the fourth season one that anyone should watch
again. The strengths of the episode actually came largely from the
supporting characters and perhaps the best of all of the storylines came
from Tommy and Sam.
Where the season premier’s greatness
lied in just two scenes, this episode’s enjoyment was spread
throughout. “Thirty-Eight Snub” was a study in the reactions
people experience after a traumatic event, and though its subject was
not lighthearted, the writing found some moments of mirth. The
subplots failed to entertain, but this episode’s core focus – the
effect last week’s events have had on some of the characters –
deserved the screen time it got.
The episode again wasted no time in
explaining how it received its title. Besides revealing Walt’s
current mindset, the act of him buying a gun in the cold open could
have felt drawn out, if not for some clever dialogue to keep the
viewer entertained. Jim Beaver (Supernatural)
also assisted the scene and his witty repartee with Walt was
giving me flashbacks to his character in Deadwood.
Walt’s own reaction to seeing Gus kill Victor is a knee-jerk defense
mode. Walt may have once tried to avoid murder and look for another
solution, but those days are behind him. Now he readily accepts it
as the only way out of his problem.
