Holiday Movie Preview 2011

As we’ve done the last several movie seasons now, each of the writers on the PAM staff submitted his list of Top 10 most anticipated films between now and Jan. 1. We then came up with our collective Top 10, and each of us supplemented it with a film not on that list that we’re excited about, which we’ve dubbed Critic’s Picks. There are other movies coming out this Holiday Season, but you probably shouldn’t care.

DVD/Blu-ray DISCussion (New for 11.15.11)

Hong Kong is a great city, if a little manic. It is also the setting of our Recommendation of the Week, the crime thriller Infernal
Affairs. Intelligently written, this movie is a must have for fans of
crime fiction and world cinema and was the basis for The Departed. We sadly have little to report on first releases this week, the only
major movies being Tom Hanks’ comedy flop Larry Crowne and the indie
dramedy Beginners. But there are plenty of re-releases to entertain you,
including the musicals West Side Story and My Fair Lady, the art house
movies The Three Colors Trilogy and The Rules of the Game and the
horror-comedy Evil Dead 2.

Swamp Thing #3 – Review

Scott Snyder has officially made Swamp Thing the greatest series it can be for this new generation. The older series is still missed, but the story and other horrific elements of this issue make it the best issue in this new series. The only complaints are the alienation older readers may get from reading it, an alienation even I feel. But I cannot deny that this series has quickly become great and sets-up the next issue wonderfully.

Alec Holland comes face to face with the creature’s lover, Abigail Holland, only to have her start shooting. With his green thumb Alec fends her off only to discover she needs his help saving a young boy who has the power to destroy the world.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations: New Trailer

The Assassin’s Creed series has always done one thing spectacularly well: throwing the player into a beautifully-realised historical city and give them free reign to wander around and explore the sights and sounds as much as they choose.  It’s the open-world of Grand Theft Auto, but in times and places much more distant and exciting than the faux-American cities of the GTA series.  The newest game in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is to take place in the city of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), notable historically for being located in between the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea near Greece, the meeting point between the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

A Great Guy to Work With: When Stars Act Opposite Themselves

When it comes to screenwriting techniques, there aren’t many as fun and frugal as having multiple copies of your character in a movie. From a symbolic perspective, the double serves as an outlet for author commentary on the lead character, providing a funhouse-mirror look at who the protagonist could become and what aspects of them are defined by nature or nurture. It’s also a comedic goldmine. After all, who hasn’t wanted a twin for the sole purpose of causing all manner of hilarious misunderstandings? So, in preparation for Jack & Jill, which will see funny-man Adam Sandler playing both of the titular twins, let’s have a look at some of the best cases for doubling down on actors. Be warned though, as what follows has more than enough *spoilers* for two.

How I Met Your Mother – Disaster Averted

Oh Slap Bet, how we missed you. The re-emergence of the long-standing How I Met Your Mother bit after a two-year hiatus was a welcome surprise in Episode #7.9, but fans could hardly consider the reignited romance of two of the show’s main characters a slap from out of nowhere.

“Disaster Averted” marks the third use of storytelling flashback this season, the age-old HIMYM tactic that usually works despite being a bit frustrating. Robin’s boyfriend Kevin (Kal Penn) sparks the episode by asking how MacClaren’s came to have a “no boogie-boarding sign” out front. Turns out this is a story not three months old that took place on the eve of Hurricane Irene’s collision into New York City.
