Batwing #6 – Review

With this issue, Batwing secures its place as one of the true gems of the New 52 as it presents some of the final pieces of David Zavimbe’s origin without missing a beat of its present day story. This is how it is done. This book is the example of what the entire New 52 line should have been.

Batwing intercepts Massacre in Egypt to prevent the death of yet another member of Africa’s legendary superhero team, the Kingdom. As that plays out, the story gives glimpses into more of David’s path, showing his frustration with becoming part of a corrupt police force and his recruitment by Batman. This battle in Egypt brings the series full circle to the opening scene of the very first issue.

Chronicle Review

With found-footage movies cleaning up at the box office over quite an extended period of time now, it seems inevitable that they’d move past their horror roots and into other genres. Chronicle is the found-footage superhero movie, and it’s one of the most unique movie-going experiences in years.

The Innkeepers Review

From 31-year-old director Ti West, who in 2010 directed the wonderfully retro The House of the Devil, comes The Innkeepers, a simultaneously old-fashioned (and unabashedly so) and tongue-in-cheek deconstruction of overused genre clichés

Catwoman #5 – Review

It’s funny, it’s sexy, it’s extremely flawed, Catwoman #5 could be enjoyed, but does little justice to Selina’s developing character, who should be declared legally idiotic by the end of this issue.

We open with Catwoman plummeting a thousand stories to her ‘death.’ With some quick whip-work (and after dealing with the meta-human Reach), Selina starts spending the 400 grand she stole. It’s all fun and games until the money-laundering police are on her tail as well as Detective Alvarez, possibly the only straight cop in the Gotham City Police force.

Deathstroke #5 – Review

This issue of Deathstroke, overall, leaves much to be desired but has enough action combined with depth to keep readers coming back for more despite the flaws. There is little progress with character development and the artwork is full of disproportioned bodies and environments that are almost hard to look at.

We step back in time to see a much younger Slade (much younger being 60) and his son Grant training with Peabody. After an ‘acceptable’ session, we return to the present to see Slade’s degrading condition and his fight with the new Legacy… who proves to be more of a challenge than any of the previous wearers of the Legacy suit.

Alcatraz – Kit Nelson

After the rather disappointing extended premiere (from a reviewer point of view), Fox’s Alcatraz did nothing with “Kit Nelson” to reassure those who have mixed feelings on the latest J.J. Abrams venture into genre shows.

The episode kept the same pattern used the previous week, building the story around an Alcatraz inmate who has reappeared and can’t help but resume activities that got him incarcerated in the first place. The title character, Kit Nelson, was sent to prison for killing 11-year-olds, and that is of course the first thing he sets out to do when he reappears in our time. This follows “Ernest Cobb,” the second episode last week, featuring a snipper whose favorite pastime consisted of shooting people at (sort of) random. The two episodes, unlike the pilot, brought nothing new to the overarching storyline, but attempted clumsily to do some character development.

Scary Girl – Xbox Review

As the XBLA season begins we have our first game that can be considered well executed. Scarygirl is a 2D side scrolling platformer, although many of the levels are structured to have branching paths that give off more of a 3D winding view and feel. Based on Nathan Jurevicius’s graphic novel the game finds Scarygirl making her way from level to level fighting enemies that range from axe-chucking lunatics in a brightly colored forest, to giant neon orange rats in the sewer of the Bad City. All of these levels bring you to a finally face-to-eye patched face with the notorious Dr. Maybee. The premise of Scarygirl is nothing impressive but all of the elements that bring you to that final showdown are executed in at least a fairly well done fashion.
