DVD/Blu-ray DISCussion (New for 11.16.10)

This week’s releases are a real mix of the sublime, the ridiculous and the cash-ins. We get the release of a critically acclaimed indie film, the extended version of the world’s highest grossing film and the continuing tragic decline of a once-promising filmmaker. On the re-release front there is a wide range of classic films and some animated features (which also see the rise of 3D Blu-ray releases).

Unstoppable Review

This is the best movie I’ve seen in a long time, it’s the best Tony Scott/Denzel Washington collaboration, and it’s the best movie Tony Scott’s ever made. I was literally biting my nails from the intensity of this smartly directed, fantastically shot, well-written, well-acted popcorn flick.

Disney pays $115 million for “Avengers”, “Iron Man 3”

Disney made some waves last year when they bought Marvel for $4 billion, putting the Mouse front and center in the ever growing genre of comic book films. With Marvel having recent success financing their own films (Iron Man followed by The Incredible Hulk being their first), the deal brought together one of the two power players in comics with one of the largest media distribution platforms in the world. Now, Deadline has it that Disney is taking the next steps in capitalizing on their investment, buying away the distribution rights for two upcoming Marvel projects: The Avengers and Iron Man 3 for $115 million.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

There is artistry behind the visual presentation of Castlevania:Lords of Shadow, and it pays off wonderfully. I enjoyed this game on a visual level more so than any game since Shadow of the Colossus, but all of that would be for naught if it didn’t make sense within the context of the gameplay and this is the games biggest success.

So grab your lasers, mount your saddle and giddy-up.
