A Study of AMC: Part 2 of 2

In the conclusion of this
article I’ll be examining the lows AMC has experienced with their
new batch of original programming, as well as a look at their
greatest commercial achievement. We’ll also take a peek at what’s to
come for the network in their newest series, and where it might fall
on the scale of AMC’s existing programs.

AMC was riding high on the
success of Mad Men and
Breaking Bad coming
into the summer of 2010. This is when they launched their third
original program since retooling the network.
Rubicon
was meant to take another cast of relatively obscure but talented
actors and insert them into a compelling storyline with deep and
often troubled characters (basically following exactly in
Breaking
Bad
and Mad Men’s
footsteps). Some things just don’t work out the way we hope, though,
and such was the case with
Rubicon.
The cast was solid for the most part, but no one stood out or
provided the audience with a particularly memorable performance. The
plot also fell short in enthralling viewers, despite its conspiracy-driven story.

Fun right? Let’s begin.

We
have so many themes out in DVD and Blu-ray releases this week: love and
fate, identity theft, war and history, foster care, organ harvesting
and perils of suburbia. Player Affinity’s top choices for this week is
the sci-fi thriller The Adjustment Bureau and the re-release film of the week is Kiss Me Deadly (but it does help that there are only two re-releases).

The Top 10 Alien Worlds in Film

When Hal Jordan makes his big screen debut this Friday in Green Lantern, his story will not only make him a superhero, it’ll take him out of this world. Literally. As a newly inducted Green Lantern, he must travel to the world of Oa to learn how to harness his powers before Earth is destroyed. With this new setting in mind, Player Affinity takes a moment to reflect on the films that took us off our little blue planet and exchanged it for some of the most memorable planets depicted on the big screen.

Matthew Fox and Ed Harris to Fight in ‘World War Z’

The production of World War Z has made a lot movement in recent days. Glasgow was just picked as a location and now Deadline reports that Lost star Matthew Fox along with veteran Ed Harris are both in talks to join this potential blockbuster for Paramount.

Both are fine actors to join the cast. Fox has had trouble finding a high-profile role outside of the hit ABC show that ended last year.Speed Racer in particular did not do much to help his film career. He now would have this film to look forward to as well as his role in I, Alex Cross, the Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious) film based on the James Patterson detective, which will begin production this fall.

Comic Book Theater Festival – Nerdlesque Review

Ever see an attractive cosplayer at a comic book convention and wish you could see them naked? Of course you have, which is why you’ll probably enjoy Nerdlesque, a monthly burlesque show with a rotating nerd theme.  This month they did a comic book motif as part of the Brick Theater’s Comic Book Theater Festival.  As both a theatre critic and a comic book reviewer, my journalistic integrityrequired me to experience Nerdlesque first hand and report back to the comic book community about the performance.

Super 8 Review

If a director’s heart and passion were indicators of quality, Super 8 would be one of the best movies of the year. If the Oscars were given for ability to imitate Super 8 producer Steven Spilberg’s movies, the film would clean up. Unfortunately, all the passion and Spielberg-esque tricks in the world can’t save this half-baked monster movie.

“First Class” First at Box Office

X-Men: First Class took a licking but kept on ticking this weekend. The prequel of sorts made an estimated $56 million domestically on a $160 million budget. The ensemble cast of young stars and respected European actors salvaged the franchise reputation earlier damaged by the “Wolverine” spinoff film. This entry scored 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, but like the reception to Thor, this was not enough to bolster the box-office sales.
