Is Fantasy TV Killing Sci-Fi?

At PlayerAffinity TV, we cover a variety of shows, but it is fair to say we have a soft spot for a specific category. As I write, TV dramas we review on a weekly basis from that category include Alcatraz, Fringe, Person of Interest, and Supernatural. Science fiction shows (and those trying to pass themselves off as such) dominate the list, but if you thought it were a sign of brighter times for sci-fi series, you would be wrong. For many years now, among this broad category of “non-realistic” series, fantasy shows have been much more successful, and 2012 is likely to reinforce that.

Winter Soldier #1 – Review

Winter Soldier has arrived, and it captures the same magic present when Ed Brubaker began his acclaimed Captain America run. Brubaker and artist Butch Guice expertly pull off an espionage thriller set within a world populated by superheroes and supervillains. It’s tense and grounded. But it has a gorilla with a .50 caliber machine gun. Does this review even need to continue?

Fine.

I haven’t quite enjoyed the latest relaunch of Captain America as much as I did the previous installment. It seems to now lean more toward standard superhero action, leaving me wondering where the elements of espionage and political intrigue had gone. I’ve found it. It’s all packed into Winter Soldier. This book reads more like a continuation of Brubaker’s original Captain America volume than the current Captain America title does. It may lack Steve Rogers, but readers will find more familiar story threads and atmosphere here.

Sweden has produced a number of great movies over the years, from The Seventh Seal to Let the Right One In. There is also a growing literary scene in that nation and The Millennium Trilogy is one of the most successful. Now all three Swedish movies are coming out on Blu-ray in their extended forms and are Player Affinity’s Recommendation of the Week.

There are a number of big releases this week, the biggest being The Help, a surprise hit and one of biggest crowd pleasers of the year. There is also the release of the comic book adaptation Cowboys and Aliens, the comedy hit The Hangover Part II and the spy thriller The Debt. Being re-release this week is the Mission Impossible Trilogy for all you action nuts, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes and the classic war movie Tora! Tora! Tora!
