Rumors have been swirling for a while regarding Sonic the Hedgehog's future in gaming. Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is still coming out soon, but turns out Sega has more in store to bring fans back. More like two new Sonic games for next year thanks to San Diego Comic-Con? Count me in.
First off is Sonic Mania, a completely new classic 2D Sonic game slated for Spring 2017. Christian Whitehead (Sonic CD PSN/XBLA ports), Headcannon and PagodaWest Games join forces with Sega on this project. This is classic 2D Sonic gameplay at its finest with Tails and Knuckles also joining the fray. New zones, classic zones reimagined and a drop dash mechanic are expected features for Sonic Mania. After Sonic The Hedgehog 4 being a disappointment last console generation, this is truly the 2D Sonic game fans have been waiting for.
However that's not all what Sega announced last night from San Diego Comic-Con. Sonic Team's next Sonic game comes out in Holiday 2017 for Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC and the NX. This latest entry features both modern and classic Sonic from Generations, so the possibility of this being the sequel to that is high. The teaser trailer for the tentatively titled Project Sonic 2017 can be seen below.
I'm personally excited for both new Sonic games, but there's always the potential "Sonic cycle" fans worry about. Hopefully Sega prevents that from happening as we know more in the coming months.
