Sony Investing $20 Million in PSN Titles

Sony wants more exclusive games on PlayStation Network and they are spending 20 million dollars to make it happen. It
is news like this that fuels my desire to replace my old 40 gigabyte
PS3 with a new one sporting a much bigger hard drive. I primarily play
my console downloadable titles on Live for this simple reason and have
unfortunately missed out on quite a few awesome looking PSN exclusives; I do hope to rectify this later in the year.

Sony’s Welcome Back Plan Worked

Remember when PSN was down and then came back, and Sony offered some somewhat shadey compensation afterwards? It worked, for them.

Sony Limits Blu-ray Viewing to HDMI

In an odd move, Sony is set to drop the ability to view HD video over component cables in its next PS3 hardware revision. Originally thought to be restricting users to HDMI use for all aspects of the PS3, Sony clarified that it was only for viewing BD movies. The move has been justified as, quite bizarrely, a means to combat piracy. The whole situation seems to be slightly forced upon Sony as they claim the change is to comply with the current AACS standards.

DC Universe DLC Going Green

It
was announced that DC Universe will be releasing a paid DLC that will
allow those to gain themselves a power ring. DC has announced that
though you will have the option to fight on the side of the Oa or the
Sinestro Corps you will not officially be one of them. Though this
shouldn’t matter too much since it fits with the game’s “almost” style.
This being that your character is “almost” Superman, or “almost” Batman.
Before you freak out not really being able to become a Green Lantern,
consider the following. DC has said that the rings players receive are
emergency rings that are duplicates of existing Green Lantern rings.
Though they have not commented on it, this most likely is the excuse for
the yellow power rings as well.

This Week on PS3 – July 12th, 2011

The summer doldrums continue, with not a whole lot in terms of new,
compelling content for the up-to-date PS3 user. Personally, I’m no where
near lacking for games to play after Steam’s annual summer blowout, and
PSN is following suit with something similar this week to help tide you
over.

Bethesda Reveals Dishonored

What happens
when you take a guy who worked on Half-Life 2 and a guy who worked on Deus Ex?
No idea myself but the potential outcome might be amazing.
Revealed in the latest issue of Game Informer is a title
going by the name of Dishonored,
being developed by Bethesda. The two big names associated with its
production are Harvey Smith, who was a key figure in the creation of the
original Deus Ex,
and Viktor Antonov, who worked as a designer on Half-Life 2 but is specifically known for the
creation of the iconic City 17 local.

Ubisoft Wants Next-Gen Now

Ubisoft’s Yves
Jacquier has spoken outwardly towards the current elongated console cycle; his
studio now feels limited by the PS3 and 360.
As
Executive Producer at Ubisoft, he and his company are ready for the next
console generation now. While it is obvious they aren’t so limited they
can’t release games, given Assassins Creed Revelations releases in November,
it’s definitely true that the hardware from 2005 is starting to show its age to
more than just the super high-end developers.

New Resistance 3 Bundle and PSN Pass Uncovered

According to information released by
German video game forum Konsolentreff, there is set to be yet
another Resistance 3 released. The game will be packaged with a 320GB
PS3 Slim with no price mentioned. It is expected that this bundle
will be released with the game this September and it joins the two
other Resistance 3 bundles announced by Sony at E3. With Resistance
being one of Sony’s biggest exclusive games this holiday season, it comes with
no surprise that it is getting the huge push that it is. Personally I
would have preferred to see an Uncharted 3 bundle as it is more
likely to move more units and attract new consumers. Don’t get me
wrong, I think Resistance is a fine series, but if I really wanted to
increase console sales, Uncharted 3 seems like the more enticing game
to present.

This Week on PS3 – July 5th, 2011

As far as new content, this week is pretty bare, though there are a few
options if you’ve missed games before and want to benefit from waiting
to check them out. We also see the return of a well liked but long
forgotten franchise in downloadable form.
