What I’m Most Looking Forward To At This Year’s E3

Over the last few years,
since it was re-launched back to its full glory after a couple of more
restrained years, E3 has become the standout video game showcase for both
consumers and the gaming press. It’s the one true event of the year where you
can guarantee a blowout of info about virtually all the upcoming software and
hardware worth hearing about across the gaming board.

E3 (or Electronic Entertainment
Expo) first started in 1995. Back then Sony was showing off the original
PlayStation for the first time to excited western gamers. This year’s E3 should
be as good as ever for PlayStation fans with some great exclusives to drool
over. In this feature I
highlight (in no special order) some of the games and hardware that I will be
most looking forward to hearing more about during the show.

Infamous 2: Improvements Over the Original

The
sequel to Sucker Punch’s electric smash hit of 2009 is nearly here
and, with the launch date of June 7th just weeks away, Infamous 2
is under the spotlight once again with high expectations. More
action-packed gameplay, bigger bosses, louder explosions, and better
visuals are all part of the itinerary, but how will the game address
some of the original’s other shortcomings? Infamous helped to
introduce many new mechanics in open-world gaming and did so in
mostly spectacular fashion. However, the game fell short with its
plot and suffered from a bit from repetition and erratic difficulty
toward the end. The title was also a tad rough around the edges in
regards to performance and graphics quality. At times the heavy
aliasing and blurry textures were very prominent and the frame rate
would take an occasional dive. The developers have stated that
Infamous 2 would feature a number of improvements in order to
address some of these issue, which will supposedly result in a
smoother experience. This points to a more optimized game engine and
higher resolution textures, but no specifics have been revealed.

DiRT 3 (PS3) Review

Dirt
3

is the newest addition to Codemasters’ off-road racing series, and is
easily the most complete and accessible game in the
Colin
McRae: Dirt

franchise. The latest title is a more mature driving experience which
is more subtle in terms of design and presentation. Having the heavy
action sports influence toned down quite a bit allows
Dirt
3

to appeal to those who want to see more professional racing action.
The game retains just the right amount of new-school racing jargon to
remain fresh, but also uses more traditional methods to draw in old
fans of rally games—such as a more mild soundtrack and less
commentary. Comparing
Dirt
3

to the previous games shows that the developers have found the
perfect mix of new and old, which makes for an all-around better
game.

Twisted Metal’s PS3 Rebirth

Twisted
Metal

made its debut at last year’s E3 convention, and now the game is
really starting to break free from the silence. The game’s developer, Eat
Sleep Play, is finally unveiling some details on the reincarnation of
the title on the PS3, and Creative Director David Jaffe has stated
that the team has been hard at work on the project. He claims that
the game, while still in its early pre-release stages, stays true to
the classics and is a fast and ferocious action driving game. The
game sports a brand new look with HD graphics yet still retains the
chaotic and hyper-violent feel of the originals. Of course, there
will be a slew of new features and improvements to the combat system
and other game mechanics, but nothing too altering or extreme.
Needless to say the new face of
Twisted
Metal

is an even crazier, over-the-top action game than its predecessors.

Sony Now Restoring Online Services

After a
3-week outage, Sony has finally started restoring PlayStation online
services in phases, and will continue their efforts worldwide until
the systems are fully operational. It could take until the end of the
month to fully restore PSN, PlayStation Store, Qriocity and other
services to all its customers, but all U.S. states and other regions of
the world should be seeing partial restoration as the result of phase
one. Sony has been updating a set of map graphics which show the
areas where service is live, along with web updates, and the United
States is now in the green zone. As announced prior to restoration,
all users will be required to download a firmware update and to
change their passwords in order to connect to the servers. This comes
as the first step in ensuring data security and protecting user
information.
