‘Dead Rising 2: Off the Record’ Electric Crusher Trailer

There still
isn’t a ton of information available for the upcoming reworking of Capcom’s Dead
Rising 2
from last year. But this trailer is certainly pretty
cool, showing off one of the new combo weapons by combining a car battery and
a sledgehammer
you can basically tear stuff up Thor style. Also spotted in the
trailer is a new icon for receiving radio transmissions that looks a lot like
an ear piece instead of the usual walkie-talkie. Hopefully this means that you
won’t have to stop mutilating zombies to find out whatever the person on the
other end needs to tell you.

Prototype 2 Gets a Release Date

Good news if
you’re planning on heading down to this year’s Comic-Con because you will be
able to get a look at Prototype 2. While the first game definitely didn’t come
without its share of problems, there was no doubt that it had potential.
Hopefully this time around there won’t be the sea of Prototype vs. Infamous
talk that smothered the game back in 2009.

Capcom Reveals Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Trailer

This comes
as truly great news to me and hopefully to anyone else that missed out on MVC3.
Much like Street Fighter 4 before it, MVC3 is to get an upgrade and a
re-release because Capcom just can’t stand the thought of only releasing a game
once, or even twice in some cases. Anyway, Ultimate MVC3 will come with, count
them, 12 new fighters for you to enjoy. That’s a pretty big increase to the
roster and it just gets better when you find out who those fighters are going
to be.

Voltron Game Announced

THQ announced at this year’s Comic-Con that they have been working on a game based on the old Voltron
cartoon. The game will offer up to five player co-op, and allow you to
play as one of the lions that make up Voltron. Whether or not you can
play with up to five players locally wasn’t mentioned.
As
a childhood favorite I’m personally excited, though at the same I’m
also a bit worried. While I have fond memories of the show, I haven’t
broken the cardinal rule of not revisiting childhood favorites. That
being said, Voltron is unwatchable to me now. Though it doesn’t
change the fact that it was a great show for older geeks like myself
when we were young.
As for the game, I hope they change the voice acting from the show, or
give it some better quality. But if the game is cheap enough I’m sure
many other geeks will be picking it up or downloading it on PSN or Xbox
live this October.

The Future of Game Design and Tech

Rumors
abound about what the new consoles will be and with this generation
feeling like it’s coming to an end perhaps as early as next year, it’s a
great time to start thinking about what gaming will be like in the
coming years.
Let’s face it, the Xbox 360 is pretty old now. We’re talking about hardware
that was built and manufactured in 2005 and already there are PC games making
the console look positively dated. Some
PS3 titles still manage to stand out but even they are running the end of their
course.
Because of the extended cycle we’ve experienced this generation, and will
likely still be experiencing even in 2013, the gap between that 2005 hardware
and the hardware of today is widening. By the time we see a PlayStation 4, the cutting-edge games for it will be
doing things akin to the jump from the early PlayStation 1 days to the late PlayStation
2, perhaps even bigger.

This Week on PS3 – July 19th, 2011

I haven’t had much time to play games in the last week, because I’ve
been too busy reading a book. Can you believe it? What is a guy who
writes about video games doing reading a book? Anyway, there’s nothing
mindblowing coming out this week, though there are a couple things that
look to be worth checking out.
