The spiritual successor to Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free is the answer to everyone who wanted a more serious Battlefield
game to play online for free. It doesn’t have any of the cartoony
characters, colorful landscapes, or talkative classes. Instead, this is Battlefield 2 made into a free online game. There are similar maps, similar graphics, and overall, Battlefield Play4Free makes the impression that it’s made for the serious Battlefield crowd.
Very few people would be surprised to learn that Swedish developer Mojang’s indie game Minecraft was the big winner at the 13th Annual Independent Games Festival which was held at the Game Developers Conference last night. This ridiculously successful game (Which is still officially in beta) won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize for Best Independent Game, along with the Audience Award. We quite enjoyed it over here, giving it both a high review score, and several awards of our own in our Best of 2010 feature.
The weekend is here, and if you didn’t find any good deals on yesterday’s list of game sales, you might find something of interest below. Some gaming convention have an insufficient number of games, others have just the right amount, however there’s one annual con which always more than the needed amount of games. Too Many Games has been overwhelming players with its abundance of interactive entertainment for seven years, and now they’re back for the 2011 installment from May 6th through May eight at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks Pennsylvania.

March is off to a great start in terms of online game sales, so let’s dive right into the pile of deals. Steampowered.com has a 70% off sale on artsy indie gem Braid. This modern classic is now three dollars and highly recommended if you haven’t played it yet. But WAIT! Before you click that Steam, link, check out Onlive’s sale right now; they have Braid for a slightly lower price along with several other indie games including The Ball, The Maw, Defense Grid and Trine for about 75% off. Plus Onlive has that impressive deal where they’ll give you one of their micro consoles, and a copy of Metro 2033 for free if you pre-order Homefront.
Magicka continues its over-the-top humor and homages to other developers and popular gaming by announcing its first expansion, Magicka: Vietnam. Vietnam seems like an unlikely setting for a swords-and-mostly-sorcery game such as Magicka, and frankly, it is. Paradox, however, has announced that their first foray in to expansion territory for their hit title is taking place there regardless. The expansion promises new gameplay areas, new spells, some new weapons and at least one new outfit for your wizard-on-the-go. The trailer launched complete with a Magicka-themed parody of the popular ’60s hit “Bird is the Word”. Paradox has not released a price point or release date as of yet for Vietnam.
Mojang the Swedish video game Developer founded by Markus Persson is known for creating the hugely-successful indie game Minecraft. That game is already a huge hit, despite the fact that it isn’t actually done yet, so it seems inevitable that Mojang would have plans to make another game someday. Well, those plans are a little further along than previously thought, because they’ve already announced the new project. It’s a free-to-play strategy/ collectible card game called Scrolls.
If you’re a grown-up heading to the Penny Arcade Expo East next month in Boston, you can join your fellow drinking-age nerds at the Friday night “Gamers Gone Wild” party held by 2Old2play.com and SFX-360.
