Rumor: Microsoft Ditching “Microsoft Points”

A recent report from Inside Mobile Apps has spawned a rumor that Microsoft’s method of converting real currency into virtual currency may be going extinct by the end of 2012. Microsoft points may soon be a thing of the past, and this news is likely welcome to those of us who have to do actual math to figure out how many points we need to buy to purchase digital content. The rumor comes by way of a statement regarding purchasing content on Windows phones, which, considering the current level of connectivity between Microsoft’s phones and consoles, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if this rumor was confirmed sooner rather than later.

The Call of Duty Elite Now On Android and iOS

The Call of Duty Elite app is now available on the Android market store, having been released onto iOS devices last week.  The app, which is free to all current paying subscribers to Elite, allows players to check their online ranking, review recent matches, customise their weapon loadouts and chat with friends.

Trapped in Tehran: An American Game Developer Faces Death

An American, Amir Hekmati has been sentenced to death in Iran for espionage.  The Iranian government has accused Hekmati of being a spy working for the CIA through developer Kuma Games.  The Iranians suggest that Kuma Games was funded by the CIA to make propaganda games that would spread pro-western political messages and “accuse Iran of involvement in terrorism.”

Bethesda Wins Rights To Fallout MMO

Last week we reported that there had been a settlement in the lawsuit between Bethesda, the current holders of the rights to Fallout, and Interplay, the creators of the series who had recently been developing a MMO version of Fallout.  The details of the settlement have been made public and Bethesda now has full rights to thethe Fallout Intellectual Property and to develop their own Fallout MMO.

Diablo 3 Scheduled for February 1st

A Minnesota Best Buy has published an advert for Diablo 3, which lists the game’s release date as February 1st. The game is officially scheduled for release in “Q1 2012”, but the Best Buy advertisement has appeared only days after Jay Wilson, Diablo 3’s director, announced that the game was“almost done.”

Speaking in interviews released on Diablo’s website, Wilson appeared alongside Blizzard Entertainment vice president Chris Metzen to discuss the upcoming third game in the hit RPG series:
