Champions Online Will Become Free To Play

It’s been a little over a year since the superhero MMORPG Champions Online appeared to tepid reviews and limited consumer interest. There have been several free updates to the game during the last year that have improved gameplay substantially, and developer Cryptic Studios have made the game available for trial in a variety of ways, including a time-limited trial on Steam, and the current system in which players have unlimited play-time in a very restricted demo zone.  It was announced today that they will switch to a free-to-play model in early 2011, with a closed beta starting November 9th.

Dragon Age Ultimate Edition Now Available

Last year’s award-wining fantasy RPG Dragon Age: Origins by Bioware certainly came with “Enough” content, right out of the box, yet Bioware persisted in a continuous torrent of expansion packs and downloadable content, right up the last month’s final installment Witch Huntwhich brought the story to its conclusion.  Some gamers were happy for the additional material, others felt that it should have been included in the game in the first place, while the most-clever Bioware fans kept our mouths shut and waited for the inevitable Game Of The Year Edition which would compile it all in one box at a nice discount.

Natural Selection 2 Preview

Released in 2002, Natural Selection was a favorite mod of mine when it was developed late in the life of Half-Life’s viable modding cycle. By combining first-person shooter elements with the organizational finesse of an RTS, it broke the conventional mold and emerged as a groundbreaking new style of multiplayer cooperation. Based in a variety of outer-space colonies and bases in the far future, Natural Selection saw a battle between the Frontiersmen and the Kharaa, who were space marines and aliens, respectively. The environments were large and full of atmosphere, with sounds and effects adding to the sense of loneliness and isolation that was often the feeling when your teammates were killed one by one. The innovative commander mode and branching development and technology trees for players to take advantage of made the game an exercise in quality teamwork, as specialized units were needed for many tasks and no one player could win by themselves. When Half-Life 2 was released, Natural Selection 2 was on the horizon to be enjoyed as a Source mod, but since then the dev team has formed their own company, Unknown Worlds Entertainment, the game has been shifted onto a custom-made proprietary engine named Spark and will be released as a stand-alone commercial title.

Nuclear Dawn Preview

Independent developer Interwave Studios is set to release their first title, Nuclear Dawn, a blending of FPS and RTS game styles that explores a niche that could stand further development. Initially a mod for Half-Life 2, it was announced in 2009 that the product would be released as an independent commercial offering. The game is entirely multiplayer, and focuses on a war between two post-apocalyptic nations as they battle for supremacy in 2049 over the battle-scarred remnants of society. As players begin a match, they can choose to enlist under the flag of either the Empire, a communistic society that emphasizes numbers and mass over quality, or the Consortium of Free States, a collection of nations that value individual liberty and technology as the solution to survival in the wastes. As the only factions left on earth, both sides continue a war that began a decade previous to decide the ideology that will guide mankind.

Mid-Week Sales October 19 2010

I’m sure everyone is too busy exploring post-apocalyptic Nevada in Fallout New Vegas to bother with the other games on sale this week, but for those who aren’t fighting Ghouls on the Vegas strip, there are a few good deals to be found online with these Midweek sales.  Games For Windows is still selling Street Fighter IV at half off for $14.99, and GamersGate.com is also selling it for half off, along with a 50% discount on sixteen other co-operative games.  Unfortunately Gamer’s Gate will only give you half off on Street Fighter IV if you buy the Two pack.  No, really.
