Faithful readers of Player Affinity may have noticed a few references to Miner Wars 2081 in our coverage of Digital Download sales. This game was recently released for sale as a “Pre-Alpha” build that gives players a taste of what’s to come. Today the developers, Keen Software House announced that they’ve signed a new investor, “Internet Entrepreneur Stanislav Vojtanek” to further the progress of their build.
Amazon got us off to a very early start on the relentless pre-Christmas sales frenzy with their “Prelude To Black Friday Deals”, now Direct 2 Drive has joined in with a week of sales on games by Rockstar Games which will run from now through Friday, with one game on sale each day. Today (Monday) it is Manhunt 2, which has been marked down by 75% to $4.99. The Manhunt series never quite got the critical success of Rockstar’s other franchises, and deservedly so, due to Manhunt’s gratuitous gore and mediocre gameplay. The second game in the series is a bit better than the first, but the increase in quality was drastically overshadowed at launch by the hysterical controversy about the Wii version’s use of motion-sensing controls.
Good Od Games has been slowly adding a series of classic RPGs from the late 90’s and early 2000’s to their stable over the last couple of months. Now they’ve completed the set by releasing Baldur’s Gate II: Complete. This comes after GoG.com released the original Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale II, Neverwinter Nights and Planescape: Torment, which were all huge commercial hits, in addition to being some of the top rated PC RPG’s of all time. They’re all based on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop top games, and fans of modern RPG’s by Bioware will see early versions of Bioware’s distinctive playstyle present in these older games.
As part of their “Prelude To Black Friday” hysteria, Amazon is holding a series of Lightning Deals on video games for the next week and a half. They’re distributing it between the various platforms, so the deal won’t alway be something of interest to us PC Gamers, but today they actually do have something relevant to us; Civilization 5 marked down to $34.99 Because this is a “Lightning Deal” it’s only available until 5:00 pm EST today (Monday).
Direct2Drive has forgone the usual weekend sale this week, and instead has been offering “Daily Deals” on MMORPGs by publisher NC Soft. Friday it was Aion, Saturday it was Guild Wars, and today (Sunday) they’re selling the City of Heroes: Going Rogue Complete Collection for $19.95, which is half off its usual price. This edition includes everything that the wannabe internet superhero needs
It’s nearly two whole weeks before Thanksgiving, yet Amazon has already started the holiday shopping season with their farcical “Prelude To Black Friday” sale on games. Yes, it’s a real thing, and that really is what they’re calling it. We here at Player Affinity love cheap games, so we’ll overlook this nonsensical hype and keep an eye on this week-long event just in case a good deal comes along.
While some gamers are saving up for Black Friday sales, the more noble amongst us are donating to gaming-related charities. Right now a pack of nerds are in the final hours of a Mega Man marathon to raise money for charity. The nice lads at Team Mountain Gaming have spent the last 40 hours playing their way through Mega Man 1-6, to raise money for the Child’s Play Charity. Direct2Drive has been holding Daily Deals of late, with just one item on sale for a limited time, rather than the usual “Weekend Sale” approach that has been used by most other online game digital distributors. Today you can grab a copy of Guild Wars Trilogy at half off, for $19.99. The deal only applies for today, Saturday.
No need to be jealous of your Xbox-owning pals. The Kinect motion-sensing peripheral for Microsoft’s console has already been hacked to work with a PC. The Kinect is basically an infrared webcam with a set of special software that lets Kinect-enabled Xbox games interpret the images. It’s not such a big stretch to make it work with a Windows PC, and as you can see in the video below, it just needs the right drivers to be able to sense your body then relay that information to a PC.
