What Our Military Can Learn From Starcraft

Before the war in Afghanistan began in 2001, President Bush famously said “I’m not going to fire a $2 million missile at a $10 empty tent and hit a camel in the butt”.  Wise words from a Commander in Chief who understood the notion of warfare centered around resource management.  It’s easy to imagine George Bush spending endless hours in the White House playing strategy games like Starcraft to hone his understanding of warfare.

Starcraft 2 Impressions

For a game that the world has been waiting almost 13 years to see, Starcraft 2 hasn’t really redefined it’s gameplay mechanics. That’s not to say the game isn’t fun though. It does exactly what most Starcraft fans want it to do, it incorporates balance, story, and visuals in a manner that very few modern or even classic titles fail to achieve. It clearly isn’t perfect, there are still plenty of things that need to be ironed out, but given the time and dedicate record of Blizzard, expect most of those things to be addressed.

Medal of Honor Beta Impressions

The Medal of Honor preorder-only beta just ended, and I wanted to share my thoughts on it. If you don’t know yet, the Medal of Honor multiplayer is a mix between Modern Warfare 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Whether or not this is a good mix is subject to opinion. Personally, I think that the mix does not work very well. The things that made Bad Company 2 and Modern Warfare 2 unique have been lost in Medal of Honor, and as a result, the game is less than it could be. In Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the destructible environments made the game more dynamic, and in Modern Warfare 2, the perks made the game more customizable. These are both things not in Medal of Honor.

A Brief History on StarCraft

What a year 1998 was, we saw Bill Clinton and the Lewinsky scandal, Titanic won 11 Oscars, Google was founded, and StarCraft was released. For those of you who have just crawled out of a cave, StarCraft was big, being the best selling PC game of the year. Not only that, but since its release it has won 37 separate awards and has been entered into the Guinness Book of Records FOUR times. Twelve years later and we are finally getting a sequel. It’s been a long journey, so with StarCraft II just days away, here is a rundown of events leading up to its release.

StarCraft, it was a game that defined a genre. Even today I still compare games to StarCraft, but what made it so great? For me the best thing about the game was the story, it sucked you into the Koprulu Sector and got you attached to all the characters. I was angry at Mengsk for leaving Kerrigan to the Zerg, was touched at the sacrifice made by Tassadar, and I actually felt a loss when, in the expansion Brood War, Fenix was killed. It was this that made me play the single player campaign time and time again.

So, StarCraft II’s Multiplayer Scares You?

It’s finally on the cusp of release and considering what gave Blizzard’s original StarCraft its lasting legacy, its multiplayer, there’s the understandable fear of being completely trounced once you enter the online arena. So, I’m here to help with some basic steps that apply to every race in the game. I was once like you; scared, helpless and so intimidated by the multiplayer space that I almost didn’t try out the beta, but here I am, placed in the silver league before the beta closed down just two days ago. If I can do it, so can you. Remember, this is basic, foundation-type stuff. This article only really helps the utterly helpless and/or/and probably/and absolutely retarded.

APB: One Week Later

It’s been a week since All Points Bulletin went live to the world in all its chaotic glory, and in that time I’ve ascertained new opinions on the lobby system masquerading as an MMO. I wish I could say these opinions were of a positive nature, but they aren’t. To express the level of disappointment I feel now compared to last week would require some form of Vulcan mind-meld mixed with a cocktail of Xanax and Valium to prevent you from killing yourself.

id Software has Rage

So Rage is a first-person shooter that takes place on Earth after most of the life on Earth was wiped out in a cataclysmic event with some of the survivors taking shelter underground in order to keep humanity going. Sounds familiar, no?

Fortunately, even though the setting will remind players of Fallout 3 and Borderlands, Rage is it’s own game. Rage is the first brand new IP in around ten years for id Software, the famous developers who created the infamous title Doom.
