What if Call of Duty Went Free-to-Play?

The
term “free-to-play” has mostly been used to describe lower-tier MMOs
over the past few years, describing games which, while literally free to
play, make a profit through micro-transactions and payments for more
content. Now the shooter genre is dipping its toe into this genre, with
both Battlefield and Ghost Recon starting new free-to-play online projects. This model has proven to be profitable for shooters such as Battlefield Heroes, a cartoony class-based shooter which preceded the recent Battlefield Play4Free.
So, with the words “shooter” and “profitable” being in the same
sentence, it would only make sense that Activision might try this
business model with their shooter juggernaut Call of Duty. So what would Call of Duty look like if it went free-to-play?

Nintendo e3 Wrap Up

Possibly the biggest piece of news to comes out of E3 was Nintendo revealing what their mysterious new console would be.  What materialized was the mutant offspring of a Dreamcast controller and an iPad.  Will this new Wii U usher Nintendo into the modern age?  Did the new line up of 3DS games make up for the lackluster launch titles?  Player Affinity’s Charles Battersby, Joe Button and Fergus Halliday discuss.

Duke Nukem Forever: Will It Live Up To The Hype?

Duke Nukem Forever releases tomorrow, and the hype for it’s debut is understandably high. This is a game that was announced in 1997, and is being released now in 2011, 14 years later. It’s shifted companies, engines, and release dates with reckless abandon.  As a result, it can be hard to know what to expect from this high profile shooter.

Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3: Which is Better?

The Call of Duty series has seen better times. Technically, it’s still the best selling and most popular first person shooter franchise out there, but with the departure of a large chunk of the original Infinity Ward team, and reports of every Activision studio pooling their efforts to get Modern Warfare 3 out of the gate, it’s easy to assume the franchise is losing steam. This wouldn’t be a problem, except there’s a competitor, and a pretty huge one, at that. Battlefield 3. This game has floored anyone who’s watched the gameplay with it’s amazing graphics, which look like they belong on a different generation of hardware. At the same time, the gameplay itself is taking a far different approach than Modern Warfare 3, with far slower pacing, less battles, and more realism. It’s somewhat obvious which game won over the audience at E3, but which one is truly better, from what we’ve seen so far?

XCOM E3 2011 Preview

The original XCOM: UFO Defense (or Enemy Unknown) is one of the most highly regarded PC games of all time, and some people still go back and play it’s turn based strategy to this day, 17 years after it was first released. That being said, there was a bit of hesitation at last year’s E3 about a new first person XCOM experience, developed by 2K Marin, creators of Bioshock 2. XCOM: UFO Defense was and still is a game of strategy, and many fans felt that XCOM couldn’t translate that strategy into a first person shooter. Well, from what I’ve seen and heard about the new XCOM at this year’s E3, I can safely say that it will feel a lot more like the old XCOM than you might think, with more deepness and complexity than was shown last year.

Kicking Ass and Chewing Bubblegum! Hands on With the Duke Nukem Forever Demo

Right, this is it, the first impression of a game that has been in development since 1997. Can it live up to 14 years of expectations? Or perhaps a better question is, what do you expect from a game with such a long development time? Do you really expect the greatest game of all time? Well, I hope for your sake that you don’t. When you’re playing a game with history like this, it is hard to know where to draw the line. Duke Nukem 3D was revolutionary when it came out, but plenty of shooters have come along in the Duke’s absence and put their own spin on the genre. I’m not going to talk about Duke Nukem Forever like I’ve been on the edge of my seat for the last 14 years waiting for it, because I haven’t. Instead, I’ll simply tell you about the content of the demo and how that stacks against the standards of the shooter genre today.

Ten Facebook Games That Don’t Suck

The greater the popularity of Facebook games like Farmville and Mafia Wars rises, the more gamers seem to hate the mere idea of Facebook games. Much like the Appstore, a lot of the games on Facebook are crap, but there are a select few which I found well worth checking out.
