Balancing Realism and Gameplay in Red Orchestra 2

Since the release of the original Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45,
Tripwire and its realistic WWII shooter have gained many awards, and a
large fan following. After some mods, and some other projects by
Tripwire, Red Orchestra is back in the form of Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad.
If anything, it seems faithful to the original, in that it’s really,
really realistic. This realism, while seemingly pointless to some, is
actually in the service of the gameplay.

On its surface, Red Orchestra 2 can seem to some like it’s only
being realistic for realism’s sake. With manual ammo checking, manual
rifle bolt action, multiple people required to man a tank in
first-person, and more. However, once you look closely at all of the
individual gameplay mechanics, they all serve a purpose to improve the
gameplay.

Avadon: What the Spider Spun

Avadon: The Black Fortress just came out last week on Steam, and today we bring you a scoop about this exciting old-school RPG, including an interview with Jeff Vogel – the brains behind Avadon’s development studio Spiderweb Software!  Avadon: The  Black Fortress has been favorably reviewed so far on Steam, and is available for both PC and Mac platforms. You have been recruited as a Hand of Avadon. What does a Hand of Avadon do? Basically, the dirty work of Avadon, a military and diplomatic force that was created by the banding together of five great nations – and this force answers to no one but itself. This set up alone might not be too intriguing, but the Hands of Avadon are being picked off one by one, and it is up to you to figure out why – and who wants them gone.

Will The Baconing Surpass Deathspank?

I was a big fan of Ron Gilbert’s Deathspank and it’s sequel Deathspank: Thongs of Virtue. The game had a funny sense of humor, an imaginative world and fun RPG/Adventure gameplay. However I was quite surprised at the announcement that Hothead Games would be developing a third Deathspank game that follows on from the ‘evil’ ending of the last game. I was even more surprised when I learned that they would be putting this game together without any input from the franchise creator Ron Gilbert. With The Baconing less than a week from release, it will be interesting to see if it can match the funny humor and fun ARPG gameplay of the last two games as well as continue the story in a meaningful way.

NYC Fringe Festival: The Legend of Julie Taymor – Review

The Broadway musical Spider-Man Turn off The Dark isn’t as bad as it was made out to be, but that’s only because the producers fired the show’s original Director and book writer, Julie Taymor.  Taymor was once famous for adapting Disney’s The Lion King into a hit Broadway musical, but now she’s only famous for helming one of the worst disasters in Broadway history, Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark.  The story of Taymor’s work on Spidey is lampooned in a musical comedy that is currently running in the New York City Fringe Festival, The Legend of Julie Taymor or The Musical That Killed Everybody

NYC Fringe Festival: Theater Of The Arcade – Review

Whether you’re a theater fan, or a video game buff, Theater of the Arcade is something you need to see.  Especially if you’re a fan of both.  It’s a live theater production currently running in the New York City Fringe Festival, and it features five short plays, each one following the story of a famous video game, but told as though they were written by a famous playwright.  Although it’s completely absurd, it’s all done with complete deadpan seriousness, you wouldn’t know that you’re watching parody if you weren’t in on the joke before entering the theater.
