Mac Gaming Memories

Mainstream media has a short memory and Steve Jobs is mostly being remembered for his work creating recent Apple products like the iPad.  Gamers are likely to remember Steve for the many hours of play spent on the Apple II, or Macbook laptops, and even big blue G3 towers (with round mice that had one giant button).  These brought us endless joy with games by Mac-friendly publishers like Blizzard and Bungie.  Our PC department shares some of these Mac Gaming Memories:

Fallout Mods You Must Play

After hundreds of hours of roaming the Capital Wasteland in Fallout 3, and the irradiated Mojave of Fallout: New Vegas, I had become a master at building perfectly efficient characters, and knew multiple ways to accomplish every quest.  The endless stretches of the wastelands has lost their wonder.  Fortunately, I wasn’t the only person who felt that I’d done everything there was to do in these games.  There is a massive community of modders out there who’ve spent countless hours adding new missions, features, locations and challenges.  If you choose the best mods out there, and combine them together, both Fallout 3 and New Vegas will offer a whole new world of adventures for even the most footsore wasteland wanderer.

How Rage Could Fail

Bethesda doesn’t make crap, and neither does id.  id has brought great to shooters to gamers for close to twenty years, and Bethesda has devoured hundreds of hours of my precious life with its Fallout series alone.  id is the developer behind this week’s big release Rage, and Bethesda will be publishing it.  While the post-apocalyptic shooter seems like a sure-fire hit, there are still some things that could mar its success.

Enough With the Zombies!

Zombies are great. There are few things more satisfying than exploding the cranium of a brain-eating monster. However, over time, like fine food at Thanksgiving, zombies have been stuffed into our mouths repeatedly, to the point where we can’t enjoy them anymore. With the release of Call of Duty Black Ops: Rezzurection, it’s a perfect time to discuss the current problems with zombies in games today, and how to fix them.

Will Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes Succeed Where Age of Reckoning Failed?

When Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning first launched, it was the big contender to take Blizzards prized MMORPG World of Warcraft down from its throne as the world’s (Or atleast the western world’s) most popular MMO. Despite its excellent setting, PVP focus and cool mechanics like public questing, Warhammer Online failed to challenge Blizzard’s massive online game. Since then, Warhammer Online has been on a steady decline as the playerbase continued to dwindle, both due to the lack of new content and the lack of a community around the game. In a push to renew the popularity of the game, EA and Bioware Mythic are revamping the game and changing it from a subscription based massively multiplayer online role playing game to a free to play battleground game somewhere between Bloodlines Champions and World of Warcraft’s Battlegrounds.

What Needs To Be Fixed In Dragon Age 3

Dragon Age 2 just announced its newest batch of story-based DLC.  Bioware is beginning to wrap up Hawke’s story and before we know it, it will be time for Dragon Age 3. Many fans of the first game didn’t care for the sequel, in fact, Dragon Age 2 was widely considered to be the ever-reliable Bioware’s first goof.  Too much focus on action and a simplified interface for the console crowd were often cited as problems with the sequel, but Bioware has always been known for delivering terrific stories in addition to their excellent gameplay.

Objections and Opportunities – Visual Novels in America

In the United States, visual novels are not exactly a common genre; the closest a popular series came to the genre for a long time was Capcom’s acclaimed Ace Attorney (Phoenix Wright). Nowadays, the closest to the visual novel genre is actually 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors by Chunsoft; it is much more in line with the visual novel genre than the Ace Attorney series, but Ace Attorney is more well known.
