Once producer/director J.J. Abrams finished working on and promoting Super 8, he finally committed to a Star Trek sequel as his next project. Now it seems that Abrams has found his film’s main villain in Benicio Del Toro.
You can relax fanboys and girls, Trekkies and Trekkettes, as what you already knew was going to happen has happened: J.J. Abrams has officially signed on to direct Star Trek 2.
For months, I have been writing about older MMOs and shooters being changed to the free-to-play business model. This trend doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon, and Star Trek Online, the middling Star Trek MMO from Cryptic Studios (creators of Champions Online), has switched to the free-to-play format.
Producer/screenwriter duo Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have revealed that they are keen to produce a new Star Trek animated series. The pair, who co-wrote and executive produced the 2009 reboot of the Star Trek franchise, discussed the project on radio show My Geek Time. Commenting on the notion of a TV show Orci said: “We have asked about [an animated Star Trek series].
We have asked what the rights are and who owns it and what are the
possibilities. It is a very early idea and we are waiting to hear back.
But we would love to do it.”
J.J. Abrams appears to finally be ready to make Star Trek 2 happen. After a little vacation, he’s ready to get to work, but the film won’t come out in June of next year. Instead, Paramount will release newly re-titled G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
With Super 8 now in theaters, J.J. Abrams can now bring his attention to a project that has movie fans anxious: Star Trek 2. With a script that hasn’t been finished, many Trekkies and those converted by the 2009 hit grew concerned about whether the film would be ready by Paramount’s schedule release date of June 29, 2012.
Paramount has been building the anticipation for its upcoming film Super 8, directed by favorite son J.J. Abrams, who also helmed Mission Impossile III and the Star Trek reboot for the studio. With the release date of Super 8 drawing near, all eyes are turning towards Paramount’s future and largely quiet tentpole for Summer 2012: a Star Trek sequel.
