Good news for Lara Croft fans. Her latest reboot was successful enough to warrant a sequel already in active development. The game was received well by audiences and critics, but after it apparently did not meet internal sales targets the future was under a little doubt. While it would have been crazy for them to not continue the series, confirmation nonetheless is good to hear.
Phil Rogers, Square-Enix CEO for the US and Europe revealed the news after speaking about a number of topics on their official website. He said “Square-Enix is in production with a number of next generation projects.” He added, “I am also excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel – something you may have heard about recently.” This was referring to comic writer Gail Simone who revealed she is writing a new Tomb Raider graphic novel that will tie into the new sequel.
Finally he also added, “We plan to share a fuller title release plan with you soon on games ranging from next-gen blockbusters (the above mentioned Tomb Raider sequel) to new cutting-edge tablet and mobile games.” Hopefully the new game can build upon the strong foundation that was made with the reboot and be a more ambitious title. Early prototypes included a more open world, horseback riding and even dinosaurs. If these ideas are realized in the sequel we could be getting a very special game indeed.
