A Tribute Comic Book to Nelson Mandela
After his recent passing, Bluewater Productions will be releasing a tribute comic book about the life of former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela. The 32-page comic book will be written by Clay and Susan Griffith and will be illustrated by Pablo Martinena with colors by Kirsty Swan.
Nelson Mandela was born into an elite family and had the ability to become a high class citizen. But Mandela chose not to be under the thumb of European control and became a lawer, political activist, national leader and a fugitive guerilla. He preached peaceful protest until a massacre resulted in his group taking a more direct approach. Their approach cost him twenty-seven years in prison, where his popularity grew with each passing year until he was released and became the first black president of South Africa in their first multi-racial elections. Mandela didn’t try taking revenge on his oppressors and even invited some of the guards from his prison to his side. Mandela was loved by many but after his term in office he stepped down.
Bluewater Production’s publisher Darren G. Davis says
“The Tribute line of comic books tells the stories of people that have made a significant difference in the world while they were with us that… It is a way for us to honor these people who have made a difference in the world.”
“Not only is this a great way to understand the importance of his contribution to the world, but a great tool for kids to read about him in a different medium… Our biography comic books are now taught in schools and libraries for students and reluctant readers”.
Print and digital copies of
Tribute: Nelson Mandela are already on sale. The comic book can be bought in print for $3.99 at

Out of curiosity, I looked up Nelson Mandela on Comic Vine to see if he made any other appearances in comic books. He has made a total of eight if you include this tribute. He made two appearances in
Black Panther and also made appearances in
Team Titans (yes,
Team not
Teen), Mad, a one-shot with his namesake from a publisher called Campfire,
Black Panther: Who is the Black Panther?, another Bluewater Production comic book from their Political Power line called
Political Power: Nelson Mandela and he appeared in
Essential X-Men #1.
If your interesting in Bluewater Production’s Tribute comics, they have also done tributes for Ronald Reagan, James Dean,
Whitney Houston and many more famous figures in history. Now Nelson Mandela will be added to that lineup. May he rest in peace.
