Like “The Switch?” Try “When Harry Met Sally”

Most guys would rather see a good horror, or action flick, or comedy, or drama than a chick flick at the local theater. But it isn’t because we’re averse to love stories, it’s because we’re averse to formulaic and derivative ones, which the majority of rom-coms unfortunately tend to be.

“Exorcism” ascends, “Takers” do just that

Three new movies made respectable debuts in a typically slow late August weekend. The Last Exorcism opened to largely positive reviews, earning a whopping 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and repossessing $20.3 million from audiences. Takers didn’t get quite such a warm reception from the critics — it had a Tomatometer of 28%. Movie fans have a mind of their own and gathered to view the caper to the tune of $20.5 million. In a reviersal of estimates, Takers stole the weekend.

The Last Exorcism Review

Since The Exorcist debuted in 1973, no film about the devil has made such a lasting impression. The Exorcism of Emily Rose was a demure attempt, telling of the fabled possession in flashbacks. It was an effort, but not a memorable one. The Last Exorcism does not outdo The Exorcist nor does it fail at grasping attentionIt sits comfortably on the fence for the majority of the film, bringing its own flair and folly to the subject.

Takers Review

Envision a GQ ad on speed with a dash of The Italian Job and you will have a good idea of what Takers has to offer. Though a slick and mostly kinetic heist flick, there is not a single frame of the entire running length that has not been borrowed from another, usually better, film. I don’t consider it a spoiler to reveal that the structure of the central robbery is identical to that of The Italian Job, down to the street-erupting armoured car interception and traffic light tampering. You would think that with all the talent drifting through Hollywood that they could come up with an original caper at least. Actually, never mind.
