If you thought that Resident Evil: Afterlife would be the last installment of the Resident Evil series, think again. According to ComingSoon.net, the film’s leading lady Milla Jovovich says that a fifth movie is happening.
“This new ‘Resident Evil’ is the first one to ever open at No. 1 worldwide. It’s the biggest movie in the franchise. So we’re definitely going to make another one.”
Hollywood has a model for a successful video-game-to-film franchise. The “Resident Evil” franchise has consistently performed, though not to huge returns. Resident Evil: Afterlife easily led all films this weekend with $27.7 million in sales. Both Resident Evil: Extinction and Resident Evil: Apocalypse both grossed around $4 million less. However, neither of the previous entries benefitted from inflated 3D ticket prices.
Warner Bros. wants Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock to play the female lead in Alfonso Cuaron’s upcoming sci-fi epic Gravity despite Natalie Portman being offered the role this past week after raves for her work in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan.
According to Cinema Blend, Bullock is next in line for the role if Portman turns it down; that would be a distinct possibility, especially if the actress intends to hit the awards circuit as a result of her Black Swan role generating Oscar talk. With Bullock’s proven star power in the wings, it’s likely that Cuaron would feel forced to comply with this studio request in the event Portman says no.
Noomi Rapace, the leading lady in the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo adaptation, has landed a role in Sherlock Holmes 2 alongside Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law. Although details about the story are being kept under wraps, we do know that Holmes will be fighting against his nemesis Moriarty, a role that has yet to be cast.
After three films, many within the fan community felt the “Resident Evil” film franchise, the most lucrative game to film adaptations to date, was wearing a bit thin. Sony/Screen Gems attempted to breath (new?) life into the franchise by repositioning the helmer of the first film, Paul W.S. Anderson, in directorial control of the fourth film, subtitled “Afterlife.” Then, Anderson used the fusion camera system that made the 3-D release of James Cameron’s Avatar such a success, but did it pay off?
