Controversial “Ender’s Game” finally goes into production

Badass female heroes are few and far between in most modern comic films, one of the more recent (and better received) being Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and her kick-ass action sequences for Iron Man 2. Now, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has noted during a press conference for the DVD release of Iron Man 2 that Marvel is in the early stages of discussion regarding a Black Widow spinoff film, intending to have Johansson reprise her role.

It is with this in mind that I have compiled a list of the best movies that I believe most successfully comment on the events of our society, be it today or 50 years ago. Some of these films had to the power to prompt congressional action or be the catalyst for an important legal decision. Others are notable not necessarily for the social issues they contain, but for the social climate they were created in. For the purposes of this article, we shall broaden the definition of political/social issue films to include these additional attributes.

It is a mix bag of releases this week, with history, children’s fantasy, social realism, crime and dancing for our entertainment. Some of these films even mix some of these elements and all of are at various levels of quality. Three of this week’s releases are direct-to-DVD features.
Anyone else out there dying to know what J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 is actually about? Unfortunately, we might be in the dark for awhile, but we are one step closer to figuring it all out, as principal photography for the film has begun. Photos from the set, if and when released, should help us determine at least something about the story, right?
